My next adventure is fast approaching, Just a quick, short post (As there will be a full trip report and also posts from the road) to say that on Saturday I get to embark on what could be an epic adventure, but then it might not be.

Last year during the OshKosh airshow I saw all the tweets of everyone having a great time full of Aviation goodness, and I was jealous. So jealous that I decided I couldn’t stand not going, so I decided that this year, I was going. So now I am! I managed to get a weeks worth of accommodation out of a Club Carlson promo last year that was run for points, so my accomodation is essentially free. I have a media pass for the show thanks to my work with AirlineReporter and I had to end up paying for my car hire and the flights, so all up a weeks vacation would run me about $800. Which ain’t half bad really! (the flights were super expensive to the middle of no where).

I have started an extra little category that is just for Osh Adventures but the trip report will be written that is for sure and I will try to keep a running blog on the go from the road about adventures each day. I am looking forward to not only getting out to see everything but just what each day is going to hold since there will be so many new experiences and people to meet. Not only that but all the new tech coming out for the avgeeks and the media access I should get as well (let’s see if I can get myself in the air!).

Stay tuned for lots of fun times ahead!

Things are progressing towards my triathlon about 6 weeks away and I have realised 1 thing over the last weekend. Triathlons are expensive! The entry fee alone is almost $90 but I guess I have to eat that with this challenge. Considering its a run, a ride and a swim that’s three entry fees combined into one (at least that’s what I keep telling myself). The other thing that is expensive is the gear!

I went shopping on Saturday to get my tri gear and god damn! It is not cheap at all. 2 pieces of clothing set me back almost $160 with tax! Not cheap at all. If I had of thought of this earlier i probably could of saved money and bought it all through the web (and earned a boat load of more points in the process) but sadly my pre thinking did not happen and I wanted to try and get in some training before the big trip out to Osh next week. $160 for two pieces of clothing, what is so good about them… well this is what they look like:

As you can see, there isn’t much clothing there at all, and they definately don’t leave much to imagination. The clothes may not look like much, but god damn are they worth it! The shorts are designed so that you can run, swim and ride in them, so there is minimal padding in the groin region but just enough to keep you from wanting to kill things due to the pain. It’s also designed to dry off super quick, so that when you start to ride or run, you aren’t dripping wet. The downside to these are that they are super tight obviously and also the same with the top. It’s meant to be tight to cover you up and wick away any sweat etc, but that just makes it all the more hideous looking. I pity the people who will see me on race day!

So what makes them worth it other than how good they are? Well it’s amazing how well things go when you have something that actually works. My swimming time has dropped dramatically and the new goggles I got at the same time (since the other ones actually fell apart) have helped me get more focused and do really help. I don’t have to stop every few laps to fix the goggles on my face, they just work and with the new tri gear, since its tighter, it’s not slowing me down. My first swim way back when was 28 mins for the 30 laps. Today i smashed it out in 14 minutes! I may have been totally out of breath and shattered after, but doesn’t that mean I have had a good work out.

So I say sorry in advance to anyone that sees me in the tri gear, but it’s worth it dealing with how horrendous I look for the benefits it gives back

O how life has become so boring for me lately. Workout, Work, Eat, Sleep rinse repeat. To be honest though, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have been working hard this week getting more serious about my training and with two days of running (Monday & Thursday), two swims so far this week (Tuesday & Thursday), I have been pushing it hard.

But other than working out, what has been going on in mal’s life? Well to be honest, not much. So here is some photos of planes, this should keep the #avgeek friends of mine happy:

The last few days (well since Saturday) I have felt that my leg is slowly improving, and by slowly I mean slowly. Ever since I got told what I had strained and how to combat it, i have been working on the stretches and the fixes. It seems to be working.

This should show you by how much:

Yep those say run. I have managed to get in two runs and come out fairly ok. I am not going to over do it and those runs if you look at the lap times (since it auto laps at 1km) I am running intervals. 1km on, 1km off. With 3km on and 2 km off total, it turned out pretty well. The last km is usually the most painful, the 2nd run usually the most comfortable, as my leg has usually warmed up by that point.

I don’t know if it is working or not, but I sure am happy that I can at least run partially, sure beats spending all my time on the bike lately, but even that has it’s moments.

It has been a while since I last got out and enjoyed a good breakfast and my friends Shawna & Dan decided to make sure that I experienced the best Banana pancakes in Seattle. So this saturday morning it was off to West Seattle, not only for my first time at Circa, but also my first time heading over the West Seattle bridge and into West Seattle itself, so this post kind of shows both.

From Seattle Life 2013
From Seattle Life 2013

So Circa is a little place, unassuming from the outside in the middle of just a residential neighbourhood. Funnily enough it is just walking distance from Shawna’s apartment so that’s where Dan & I parked and walked up to meet her there. It wasn’t as busy as it could have been but it was earlyish for a Saturday morning. I didn’t have to even look at the menu as it was quite simple what I was getting but the menu is pretty good. Good choice of Savoury, good choice of sweet but not overwhelming. Prices are good to.

From Seattle Life 2013

Shawna & Dan both went with scrambles and they looked good, not to big and heavy looking like a lot of places I have been to. The pancakes looked good. They were average size, came with 2 strips of bacon, some butter and 2 eggs (not in the photo). Now the banana pancakes don’t come with the usual maple syrup, they come with a very dark brown “Pecan Praline syrup”. It looks good, and it wasn’t as sweet as I expected it to be. What sat in front of me was a good plate of food. Not to big and definately tasted pretty damn good. The last banana pancakes I ate were really big and heavy, these were just the right size and had way more banana flavour. The bacon tasted good but imo needed to be a little bit more crispier.

From Seattle Life 2013

Overall I think these had to be the best Pancakes I have had in Seattle, they definately got it right and I don’t think it is the kid of place that has a big following online, it felt more like a small neighborhood place that is out of the way and more “hole in the wall”. I did convince Dan & Shawna to hopefully join me at Maltby Cafe for my birthday, it won’t be a huge big thing but I have a craving for a cinnamon roll.

From Seattle Life 2013

After a good breakfast (and much discussion of if that really classified as a biscuit or not), Dan & Shawna took me on a little tour of west Seattle. A drive along Alki Beach (no parks on the side unfortunately) and part of me saying to myself “I must come down here another time with the bike and go for a ride” and then to a few lookouts that overlook Seattle so that I could get a few photos. Much fun!

From Seattle Life 2013

Just over 3 years ago (well 3 years and 1 week) I completed the first of my challenges in my goals that would change my life. I am sure you have all read about my story to change my life. Looking back I looked very different back then, I look very different now compared to that day as well. From start to finish it was a total transformation. The thing that most people assume though is that everything in my life is all hunky dory and that it is all 100% guaranteed that I have lost all the weight and it won’t ever come back. That is far from the truth.

Each day I wake up and I struggle. I still have days when I wake up and think to myself “I don’t want to do this” right before I head off for a workout. 5 more minutes or sleep, or a day of rest is all I want some days, but i push through it and keep going. This is my life now, I could go back to the way I was but I don’t want that. I still run (well after this injury is worked out, I will be) and I still challenge myself all the time. My nutritionist once said to me that if I could keep the weight off for 3 years straight, that the chances of me keeping the weight off for the rest of my life would be 90% higher.

It’s that 10% that worries me sometimes. I still struggle with the food some days. I have to stop myself so much from eating to much crap and lately since the injury it has been even harder to stop myself from eating the stuff I shouldn’t be and saying to myself “well when I get over this injury I can just lose it all again”. But that just won’t help me much at all. Those kinds of lies are just dumb. So I have to constantly be tough on myself, work hard, give myself those slaps to the face that I need at times. Right now I wish i could run Punishment Hill to remind myself just what happens when I screw up. It was as it says my punishment for when things went not the way they should.

So to all of those who struggle with weightloss or getting fit or staying fit, don’t worry, we all do… no matter what!

Last year on the 4th July I was in LA, spotting for the a full day for the first time and doing my first US Based trip. Well this year, since I had spent most of the last weeks of May/June travelling and would be spending the end of July/Beginning of August away, I figured it was better to just kick it at home and see what happens.

With no invites from friends for any parties and to be honest, was dying for a chance to just stay at home for once. That’s what I did. I took the opportunity to explore more of my own city. I took the bike down to the Burke Gilman trail early in the morning and took a nice almost 10 mile ride. It was nice to watch the city wake up by the water and not knowing where I was going was a bit of the fun. I just kept riding till I hit like 8km and then turned around and came on back.

After that I came home, did my laps in the pool since I have found that if I do it in the morning at 9am when the pool opens up, it’s usually empty and there are no children around. I was pretty angry on Tuesday when there was so many kids in the pool I couldn’t even get a single lap in without hassles. So the bliss of an empty pool at 9 in the morning was just amazing.

After a quick breakfast it was time to begin some fun (for me at least). A recipe had been teasing me for quite some time. To give you an idea of what kind of cake, heres a shot of me prepping the cake batters:

From Seattle Life 2013

And here they are prior to going into the oven

From Seattle Life 2013

Yes it’s a rainbow layer cake. An amazing cake that is 6 tiers tall, each a different colour. When frosted with a bright white frosting it lets the colours stand out brilliantly. The cake and frostings itself was nothing special. It was the assembly and the striking nature of the colours etc that make this cake a challenge and worth the effort. I played with Instagram Video a bit and uploaded it to youtube as well:

The cake turned out brilliantly and the guys at work were super impressed by it.. to be honest, I just loved seeing their reactions as only one of the staff knew what I was doing and she was super psyched to see it all come to light.

From Seattle Life 2013

I also took the cherries that I had picked last weekend and made my first attempt at jam. Mind you it was a messy effort but it was well worth it. I made a whole heap of jam and I tasted it today for the first time. It is not super sweet, it’s sugar free (used honey instead to help with the gelling) and what sweetness comes from the cherries themselves. Just the way I like it. Although on the day I wasn’t quite sure how it would turn out but i am quite happy with it.

I finished off the day by working on a heap of photos in the backlog and just generally bumming around. I tried NOT to do to much work remotely from home but I did do a bit to make sure that I had a manageable Friday.

A quiet day, way better than my quiet attempt at a Saturday… but thats a different kettle of fish.

I wanted to get out and see more of Washington State this year, well I have done just a little bit of that. Last Sunday my friends Dan & Shawna invited me along on a little adventure they wanted to go on. I happily said yes and although I apparently lost the coin toss to drive, Dan was the chaeuffer for the day. I was the “navigator” although that function was actually performed by the GPS. I just took photos and watched the scenery pass me by!.

Our adventure was out over the Cascade Mountain range, out east to the Yakima Valley to go cherry picking. It is the cherry season and they are super super cheap compared to back home in Aus. After an early morning start, a quick breakfast it was time to hit the road out east on I90 for my first time over Snoqualmie Pass. The pass thankfully had not a glimpse of snow (though some of the mountains around here still do) and on the other side we made a brief roadstop at a Gas Station for some coffee and a bathroom break and then it was time to let Dan loose on “Canyon Road” so he can enjoy himself.

From Seattle Life 2013
From Seattle Life 2013

Canyon Road was twisty, windy and full of nice smooth bends, tight turns and lots of fun. I can see why Dan wanted to drive it and I think i got duped on the coin toss for this one reason 😉 But I will let him take the win, cause it sure was a lot of fun. Even got a nice giggle out of a guy on a motorbike in front of us.

From Seattle Life 2013

Once into the Yakima valley we headed to a little town called Naches where we went cherry picking at “Thompsons Farm” and it was so cheap. $1.50 a pound to get out in the sun, enjoy some time with my friends, eat… i mean pick some cherries and think to myself just what I can do with them. We really had no idea what we were doing really so kind of went through testing a bunch and if they tasted good, picking them from there.

We got a pretty good haul and all three of us were set back less than $17 for all of our cherries. A true bargain. I picked up a good heap of Bing to turn into some Jam and some Rainier cherries to snack on and also share with my coworkers. It was certainly worth it. As you can see our haul was fairly decent and for what we paid it was a steal. Add on the “samples” that we had and it was a good mornings work if you ask me.

From Seattle Life 2013

We headed out of Naches, made a brief stop at the farms market in town to take a look and headed into Yakima for some lunch. Shawna grew up in the area so she was determined to let me experience a true icon of the area, Miners. This place has that old school American burger joint written all over it and the food was good. The burgers were HUGE! and the fries were ok. The curly fries and Tater Tots (aka potato gems) were better than my fries but the show was stolen by my shake. A Peanut Butter Snickers Shake that had a fantastic ratio of goodies in the bottom of it. At the start it was so thick I couldn’t even get any of it into the straw, I had to let it melt a little. Wasn’t so bad though, got to enjoy the sunshine, friends and a fantastic lunch. What more could you want?

After lunch we hit up a few wineries to visit and I spent some time walking one of the vineyards taking photos (which I have barely even looked at mind you) and then we headed home. Traffic over the pass looked bad, so a quick decision after some checking (thank you traffic apps) we headed home the longer way via Leavenworth. This was my first introduction to Washington State’s own little piece of Bavaria. Dear god in heaven had I been consuming something? It was Bavaria everywhere!!! Every single place in town had the signs to show it! It was truely crazy. We spent some time stretching our legs after a number of hours in the car and I was enjoying the high temps (it was around the low 30s at this point).

Before long we were back on the road, this time on US 2 up and over Stevens Pass (the highest point I have now been in Washington State) before we were back down, through Snohomish county back to my house.

From Seattle Life 2013

I had an amazing day. It was long, almost 12 hours but I would not take it back or complain at all. Pretty soon I need to get back out there and explore some more of the state. This time I get to drive but where to next? Pumpkin picking will begin in September/October so looking forward to that (though I won’t be around much of october). The snow will pick up though so that will make things interesting. Maybe head out further to at least Moses Lake, to get me some touch and go shots of all the Boeing jets using the Grant County Airport for training? Who knows, but if my friends ask me to go somewhere again. I won’t say no. They were fantastic guides, so to Dan & Shawna I say thanks for making this tourist feel a little bit more at home!

So last week I bought myself a Fitbit flex. If you don’t know what one is, it is kind of like the Nike Fuel+ bands. If you don’t know what that is either, well it’s like a pedometer, however it sits on your wrist and helps monitor your movements and your activities throughout the day.

When I got it, I was a bit suprised as you can see from the box, it is a wrist band obviously

From Seattle Life 2013

What you don’t realise is that the actual “Flex” itself is tiny! Not even the size of my pinky finger.

From Seattle Life 2013

It is suprisingly small and yet does so much! One thing I really like about it is the fact that I don’t even realise I am wearing it. I could wear it all day and not even notice it was there. Maybe I was used to it from the powerband that I had on my wrist for almost 3 years. It doesn’t move about at all and thankfully it is water resistant, meaning I don’t need to take it off while I swim or shower.

Actually using the flex is pretty simple. Sadly my phone isn’t compatible with the sync software (not all android phones are) but the newer ones are and so are iphones. My laptop is also not compatible but that is not suprising, no one likes it! So at the moment till I get a new phone, it will only sync at home. I barely have to even go near my pc and it will sync itself. I just walk past it, or near it, or go to the tap, it can even sync from my bedroom.. I think.

It tracks my steps pretty well and although the calories I am burning, I am not quite sure of yet, it looks ok to me. One of the things that a lot of people said did not work was the sleep monitoring. Although it is a bit difficult to get it going (you have to tap it for 1 to 2 seconds, though sometimes it takes more) the sleep stats are one of the more suprising bits of information for me to comprehend. I have always known I don’t sleep well, what I didn’t know was just how many times during the night I got up. I am waking up on average around 6-8 times a night. I can usually only remember 2 or 3. But its consistent, it’s not as if it is one night at 6 or something. It’s every night. I am not sure how accurate it is, but seriously that can’t be a good thing!

What I will have to do is keep it up and see how it goes, I wouldn’t mind revisiting the stats in a month or so and see how it looks

Saturday 08th June 2013

I awoke nice and early and snuck out of the apartment to head to the gym, trying not to wake my friend on the couch. Since we were heading down to LAX for some spotting on the first Virgin flight of the day it meant that I was up way way early, but it had to be done. I got in a good gym session while my friend woke up and got himself ready for the day ahead. By the time I was back and showered, he was good to go so we hit the empty roads heading for SeaTac.

Since this was only a day trip for me and a one way for my friend, no need to pay for parking just a cheap $2.50 one way Orca fare for my friend and free for me! So we pulled up at the Tukwila Park & Ride for the Link Train and headed up to the platform. While waiting for the Train (light rail really) a couple came up asking us if this train will take them to the Airport so they can rent a car. This made no sense as the rental car facility is offsite and pretty much across the street from the station. We tried explaining this to them but it just did not get through to them. When the train arrived we walked away!

On the brief ride in, saw a few Alaska specials at the North gates including the new Spirit of Hawaii livery that was only released earlier in the week. Sadly as Virgin Depart from the B Gates and we were cutting the time came relatively close, there was no time to get over to the B gates for a look and photo. Once off the train, you then start the trek to the opposite side of the airport to get to the Virgin America check in. It’s a long way to dodge what felt like every single person in Seattle leaving that morning.

During Check in we were proudly told we had been put on the Standby Upgrade list (not first class just Main Cabin Select) and I again had to remind them to put my priority information on the boarding pass. Sadly the booking again was not picking up my Gold Status to the boarding pass without any information as to why. *sigh* Once we had gotten the much needed priority stickers we headed towards security in the south, figuring it would be quieter…. WRONG

From LAX Avgeek Run

Security was a mess. The South checkpoint was rammed full of people, the centre was just as bad. It was a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils and trying to get through. Thank god for the priority stickers as it was definitely needed. Even with priority it still took almost 20-25 minutes to get through security and that pretty much canned any time we had spare in the terminal. Hell once we got through we were pretty much right on boarding time!

Once through security (yes I got nude o scoped), hot footed it over to the boarding area where I had to at least get a proper boarding pass as we were on the standby upgrade list and they hadn’t issued us any seat assignments (I have a feeling flight was oversold). We were offered either standard service seats in Row 4 together, or two separate middle seats in MCS. Since I hadn’t had any breakfast and figured the free food onboard would help and my friend didn’t care either way. We took the upgrade.

Boarding was well and truly underway by the time our seats were all solved and thankfully they had not called full general boarding just as we walked up so we were able to avoid the full throng of people when we boarded. There was a bit of a line up as we walked down the airbridge but nothing horrible. What greeted me on board was not the sight I wanted to see.

From LAX Avgeek Run

Already in place were the people in 3A & 3C. I will say at this point that I am not angry about this or anything but when your brain sees what I did, it instantly reacts the same way with utter regret. There was a lady of size in 3A. She wasn’t spilling over into my seat or anything like that but she blocked the window she was that big. I wasn’t even sure if there was a window! My friend on the opposite side didn’t have it that bad, but part of me at that very instant was extremely regretful. Should of taken Row 4!

From LAX Avgeek Run

I settled in as best as I could and shoved my book into the space infront for storage (take note of this). As we waited for boarding to complete I apoligised to my friend (via Twitter since he couldn’t hear me from the other side of the cabin) and tried to settle in. I was getting myself sorted since I didn’t have time before boarding (obviously). By the time we started to push back I was reaching for my book in the front storage when it wouldn’t come out. I had put it in upside down to the way it should of gone in, and now it wouldn’t budge. I tried for a few minutes before we started to actually move and as the crew came around to do last minute checks I took one big yank on my book.

With that my book came free and so did the entire front panel of the storage area. Uh oh! There was headphones & safety cards going everywhere and the panel fell straight to the floor with a thunk. Great… just what I needed. I ended up holding it up till a crew member finished her safety demo, then as we were taxiing out she was in the row trying to fix it. Mind you neither myself or the person next to me could move as the seat belt sign was on and the lady on the left didn’t allow for ease of movement at times.

It was fixed and all without a hassle from the crew and we ended up taxing to the runway at the South and as we taxied out I got a brief glimpse out of the window from the row behind. I saw the Alaska Retro jet at one of the C Gates… dammit! Along with that we also passed the Delta Skyteam 737 and the Habitat for Humanity 767. Dammit again! One day I don’t go for the window and I utterly regret it!

We climbed out of Seattle and turned right using the usual departure. During the climb out the crew asked everyone to “Close the window shades, so as not to blind everyone else”. Bit of a bad call if you ask me, who said they get to make that decision. Not that it affected me all that much. Pretty much this flight was going to be me settling back reading my book as much as possible without causing too many problems (since I hadn’t gotten off to the best start).

I was trying my best to not fidget or move but it had to be done at times. I browsed through the menu and saw that the yoghurt and granola was missing and so was the peanut butter & jelly sandwhich (my back up plan if the granola wasn’t available). None of it was there.. just the chicken protein plate (which so was not a breakfast food) and the cheese plate. I figured either the menu was wrong or they catered the flight wrong. When I asked the crew, they told me that it was right and that is what was offered on the morning flights. Pass on that! Considering I was trying to eat as healthy as possible this morning I had no chance of that happening. So not only had I given up a window seat to get food, the food I wanted I couldn’t get. should of stayed in the window seat. Rookie move! In the end I just choose the least worst option and went with it (I took the Kuko bites which were close to a granola bar as possible).

From LAX Avgeek Run

The flight other than that was pretty boring. I tried to keep myself caffeinated as much as possible and my plan to order double coffees failed, but when the flight attendant came out she asked me if i meant to order 2 and i said yes. So I didn’t have to keep bugging her for more coffee. So she bought me 2 coffees the next time around with the comment that i should be happy she brewed it strong that morning (I was). On my last delivery of coffee (was up to my 5th by that stage) she told me to just flag her down so she could refil my cups so that it doesn’t waste the cups.

From LAX Avgeek Run

Descent was quick and effortless as we came in to the airport from the North and touched down passing in and out (as expected). We were at the gate pretty quickly and once we could actually get off the flight and into the terminal (there was a hold up for some reason) we both got out of the squish as quickly as possible. I can’t really complain about a flight where I get a free upgrade can I? We both only had carry on so once we were out of the main gate area we were free to head straight to the rental shuttle, where the one National Shuttle was already past us. The next one was only a few minutes away but the douche bag driver just drove straight on past us. Even with me flagging him down! What a jerk!

From LAX Avgeek Run
From LAX Avgeek Run

The next shuttle took what felt like forever (at least a good 10 or so minutes) so we were in jeopardy of missing some good arrivals). We eventually made it to National’s rental lot and after walking up to the Executive Aisle it was all Dodge Challengers today.

From LAX Avgeek Run

Even though there was plenty to choose from today there was nothing that just instantly took my fancy (or my friends). There was a few trucks, couple of decent SUVs, even a KIA hybrid which is what I was leaning towards. I asked the lot attendant what the newest was and he said he had no idea and just check the mileage on the windscreen ticket. We started doing this and then he came over and pointed out a Hyundai Genesis with 13 miles on it.

From LAX Avgeek Run

We both ran for it. What better than a brand new vehicle! The car was so new the plastic protection sticker for the stereo was still there. We got ourselves sorted and headed out of the lot to go spotting. The car wasn’t bad my only complaint is you can’t charge a usb or power plug while the engine is off (at least it wasn’t working for this vehicle). We spent day spotting with another friend crisscrossing the area to different spotting locations. I won’t bore you with the specifics but the haul was ok.

Around 4ish I started to pack up my gear and bid farewell to my friends, it was time to head home, on my lonesome. I returned the car (only adding 20 miles to the clock) and jumped on the shuttle back to the airport, getting dropped off at Terminal 3. The Virgin Check in desks were deserted, just no one around but it seemed all the staff working where fixing problems as the wait was long. I contemplated using a kiosk but I knew I wouldn’t get the priority status that way. When it was my turn I had to push the issue again same as in Seattle and this time the staff member said I was a red member and not entitled. Which was weird since she was holding my Gold Card and I was in the priority check in area. I pointed out this fact and she fixed the priority stickers.

BUT the TSA don’t like the term priority it seems as today you’re not entitled to it, you go to the end of the queue, no using those hard earned privileges. So I did and grumbled to myself about what’s the point, to which the person behind me in line agreed. I still got nude o scoped (i can never avoid that machine) and got the usual secondary pat down. After that it was off to the lounge.

The staff at the Virgin Loft were as great as always, joking around saying I should just move in if I am around so much) they even double checked I knew about the secret door. I was up in there to grab a snack before my two flights home and to get a few spotting photos thanks to the awesome views. I thought I ran into someone i knew but wasn’t sure. Pretty much just got the photos, loaded up on a few snacks (for now and later) and got some power to my phone.

I headed out just before boarding stopping to see if there was anything further forward seat wise, which there wasn’t.

I boarded from a crowded gate area, into the relative calm and I headed way towards the back, not that I minded as I had a window seat on this short flight. I got myself settled quickly and plugged into the power just in case, as my phone was running pretty low.

The flight filled up pretty quickly and my seat mates eventually arrived. Seems they had ridden down from San Francisco as they had bike helmets in their carry on bags.

The sun was slowly diminishing in the area as we pushed back but managed to miss a good shot of Air Berlin One World taxiing past us. We headed out to the North Runways which is always a quick taxi. Take off was quick and effortless as we climbed out of LAX over the beach and eventually turned back towards the north.

The cloud layer was fairly low so after we got up through the layer, it could be a flight to anywhere. All you could see was cloud below and blue sky above. I settled into my book and let California pass me by outside. Drink service was super slow on this extremely short flight. We were well into descent before I got my drink. Which had to be consumed quickly (along with a banana from the lounge).

As we descended over the “South Bay” area (as I heard my seat mates referring to it) i spotted San Jose just outside my window. Passing SJC where the week before I had flown out to Japan from was a bit surreal. It was a nice clear descent, not much in the way of clouds around, meant I could enjoy the view of a United 737 joining up off our right side.

As the United 737 got closer and closer it meant I would get my first real tandem touch down. It looked to be good for photos to as the light was great and the two aircraft were battling it out as if in a race. As we both levelled out and drew in side by side the United 737 touched down just half a second ahead of us on the Right side. As full spoilers and reverse thrust was engaged on both aircraft I was still trying to take photos as we took the first available high speed exit. What I would’ve given for Channel 9 during a landing like that.

An extremely short taxi to Terminal 2 at SFO and we pulled up at the gate. I had about 20 minutes by now to make my connection, plenty of time! More than I needed actually, as it took a while to extricate myself from the back of the aircraft, however when I did and checked the monitors for the next flight it was the same aircraft I had just flown in on. Awesome.

Just enough time in T2 to get a few photos of the refurbished terminal (it looks super slick), grab a sandwich for the flight and head back to thd gate. I checked if there was any better seats free and was offered an exit row without recline. I’ll take it!

As I was handed my new boarding pass the flight was called and I headed back on board the same aircraft I had just gotten off. There had been a crew change as there was not a single familiar face.

I headed back to my seat and got myself set up, figuring I would be joined by a seat mate, so I stored my stuff in the overhead. I was to busy reading my book (trying to finish it off) to notice no one sat next to me. I looked around just before we closed the doors and it was a pretty light flight. Not only did I have a row of 3 seats to myself, i had 2 full emergency exit rows. 12 seats to myself… Score!

I moved my stuff down to the empty space in front of the seat next to me and we pushed back. The sun was fully setting by now and as we taxied out it didn’t allow for the best photos which was a pity as we passed the Shamu 737 from Southwest and also the Delta Skyteam 737 and 757. I don’t know what it is with those two aircraft but I have seen them more than any other special livery aircraft.

We climbed out from a powerful takeoff roll and turned right to clear the runway path, then it was a nice gentle climb to altitude. Again much more of the same on this flight. Once above the layer it was just fading light as the sun set on the other side of the aircraft.

I had myself some dinner and a few drinks as we cruised north and thankfully by the time we reached descent over Portland, i had finished my book and was enjoying the last little hints of light as it faded away. Passing Mt Rainier was great and we descended for a southern approach.

After coming on a little fast in my opinion, we touched down and taxied back over to the B gates. It was good to be home. After disembarking I started the long long trek over to the Link Station, retracing the same path I had walked that morning. I watched as a Link Train pulled away in front of me. If I could of run I would’ve made it, but it didn’t matter there was another in 10 minutes. 15 minutes later i was at the truck, 40 minutes later I was at my apartment, safe & sound. 20 hours since I had woken up, What a long day!
