After exiting the Tram at the D terminal and following my signs towards the doors, I was heading towards my hotel, the Grand Hyatt DFW. I had read a recent review of this hotel and was looking forward to it What I was really looking forward to was the fact that in the morning I would be mere steps from security and the check point was literally at the bottom of the lobby escalators. The Grand Hyatt is located on top of the D terminal, commanding views towards the runways from some rooms. When I checked in there was a bit of a line and a number of people begging for rooms cheaply as their flights had been cancelled (probably flying to the east) but I am sure the Grand Hyatt was not giving out rooms cheaper than what I had that night ($85!).

When I checked in I made sure that I had a runway view on a high floor. I didn’t realise that the “5th floor” was the 5th of 8 floors with rooms starting ABOVE the terminal. I figured 5th floor would be the first floor. Nope! So my wait while they checked if there was anything higher with a runway view was probably pointless.

The rooms and the hotel were all very modern and quite stylish. I liked it. The room was pretty spacious considering so I wasn’t going to complain at all. What I did like though was the fact that view from my room was spectacular. Just as I opened the blinds a British Airways 747-400 was taxiing past. Score!

I went for a bit of a scout of the hotel to get myself acquainted with things and I wanted to check out the Gym for the morning, I usually like to do that the night before so that way I can navigate myself with ease the next morning and I don’t need to try and find my way in the half asleep stupor. The gym was pretty awesome, all new equipment and even an airport view from the top floor! They had an outdoor pool deck, but it faced the wrong side of the airport at that time (not that I would complain as it would allow free reign for great shots at times).

The one little niggle I have about the hotel is that the hotel uses these tiny square pillows. They are stupid!! Not even the option of a real pillow… I mean seriously… really? The usual mini bar in these high end hotels is the touch sensitive ones that essentially bill your room the second you touch anything so that was a given, but also no coffee machine in the room (they would bring you one if asked) but they did offer a free espresso from the lobby cafe during morning hours (sadly I wouldn’t get to take this offer).

From Dallas Mileage Run

I headed off to get some dinner and I had reserved a car with National for super cheap. $11! With taxes it came out at $23 which would probably workout by the time I added some gas either cheaper than eating at the hotel or cheaper than cabs to get around because DFW is HUGE! The rental car lot is offsite and it is a bit worrying when signs say “5 miles ahead” or the bus driver announces “we should arrive in approximately 10 minutes”. This is probably the largest airport I have ever been to.

From Dallas Mileage Run
From Dallas Mileage Run

The rental car lot was easy as usual, straight past the counter (with the guy trying to upsell me to a convertible… in the rain… smart…) and I picked up a car from the executive aisle (I will keep that to another post this week). As I walked down the lane the attendant looking after the aisle told me that if the keys were in it, feel free to take whatever I wanted. So that I did. With that I headed off to run a few errands by finding a pharmacy (which didn’t have what I wanted so drove over to the Walmart about 10 minutes away. With that done, it meant that I could head for some dinner. I was dying for one thing. BBQ!

I had been craving good Texas BBQ for a while and all week had been hitting up the guys at Crankyconcierge for their recommendations (as a few of them are either from Texas or have family there) as well as other people I knew. I had two options that i was going to go with.

1. Main North BBQ
2. Hard Eight BBQ

Main North was buffet style and it looked pretty empty when I had cruised past earlier on the way to walmart so that was out. My rules are if its empty.. not really unless recommended. If its Empty and a Buffet and a BBQ place in Texas, either the quality is no good or they are sold out. I figured it was sold out or almost so, and decided to try my luck at Hard Eight. When I rolled up it was packed, i was lucky to find a car park.

This was a good sign and immediately upon entering the “pit” I could smell the wood and the goodness right then. I was in Heaven. I tweeted out a pic and instantly got replies telling me I was in the right place. I knew being in Texas it was all about the Brisket. So I was gonna grab some of that, some smoked sausage (spicy of course) and apparently I had to get a couple of “poppers” which were like little chicken bites. That with some coleslaw, pickles, 2 slices of white bread and sauce and all the beans I could eat (and those beans were freaking AWESOME) was $12 with a soft drink and I was set!

I wanted something sweet and had a google round, I couldnt think of anywhere to go until it hit me. I had been chatting to someone about the Cheesecake factory. I googled and there was one about a 10 minute drive away… why not! So I drove over, picked up a piece to go (if i had of wanted to sit down and eat the wait was 90 minutes!) and headed back to drop off the car. I dropped the car off, fought with National over the rate for 20 minutes (turns out because I didn’t have the car past midnight it was 3 times more expensive, though they honoured my booking rate) and I jumped back on the shuttle to the Hyatt and some sleep.

Conclusion

Saturday 9th February 2013

O Dark Thirty, a man arises and stumbles around in the dark readying himself for the busy day ahead. This is probably a common scene for everyone but it was reality for me. Today marked the start of my first real mileage run in the USA. The next two days were not going to be easy, but they were going to be fun for the avgeek like me.

I was rewarding myself by taking my first rest day from training in several months so this meant i could get that little bit more sleep. I was already pushing it for a 6am flight as it was and my cut off was 4:15 to leave the house if I was going to make the flight. Truth be told, by the time I drove all the way down and parked the truck I may not have much time spare at all.

From Dallas Mileage Run

I managed to get out of the house by 4:08, 8 mins behind my schedule but 7 minutes ahead of the cut off. Not bad. In the process I did manage to forget my glasses though 🙁 Traffic was non existent as I sped down the Interstate towards SeaTac and Masterpark. With the truck safely parked and locked away, I grabbed my bag and headed for the airport.

From Dallas Mileage Run

Check in was going to be easy as I had my Velocity Gold card at the ready and I had already checked in the night before on my phone so I had my boarding passes anyway if I needed them (and a mobile boarding pass means no TSA writing on them!). But I did the smart thing and got a printed copy anyway (just in case). As I was taking carry on only (with my tight connections I would be dumb to do it any other way at all) it would be easy if I was running behind as I could just stroll up to security. Which I did anyway. No need for priority security as there was literarlly no line at all. I stripped off, put my stuff on the conveyor and as usual, got Nude O Scoped.

From Dallas Mileage Run

Shoes on, bags repacked, belt in hand, I hot footed it down to the Train as I had about 15 minutes till boarding and I still had to get over to the S Terminal and I wanted to make a stop at the Skyclub for some breakfast. The train was waiting when I got down to the basement and within minutes we were heading to the S gates (via the B Gates first). My gate was right below the Skyclub so that would make it easier.

From Dallas Mileage Run

When I showed up at the Skyclub the guy at the counter took one long look at my Gold Card and shook his head. I was getting ready for a fight or having to pull out the access rules but he started looking it up himself. He scanned through and said to me “wow you get access when not flying internationally”. Little did he know that was the one true reason I was doing this. You see one of the benefits of having elite status with a Foreign program is the side benefits. As Star Alliance Gold with Aegean I still access the United Clubs when a United flier of the same tier can’t do that. The same with my Velocity Gold. When I fly Delta I get access not only to priority security, check in and boarding just like a Delta Gold would, I get lounge access at any time, where as a Delta Gold would only get it when flying internationally. The one thing I give up are the free upgrades? To me considering the times I fly I probably wouldn’t clear the upgrade list anyway or fly enough to make that tier without a status match or bonuses, I’ll take it!

From Dallas Mileage Run

So here I am, let loose in the lounge with only 5 or 10 minutes to grab a coffee, something to eat and get my butt back out the door. I was expecting a nice bowl of Oatmeal and a Banana just like I had in Los Angeles at the Hyatt Garden Place. *bzzzzt* wrong. That is not going to happen. There was no fruit in site (not even an apple) and the oatmeal was like water, absolutely disgusting looking. So I grabbed a bagel, some grape jam, a couple of fig bars (like Arnotts Fruit Pillows) and headed back out the door. No time for even a coffee (not that there was any takeaway cups anyway, like United & Virgin had mind you), my flight was about to board. I rolled up to the gate just as they were pre boarding and within about 2 minutes First Class was called.

Delta Air Lines – DL1634
Seattle-Tacoma to Salt Lake City (SEA-SLC)
0600-0906
Boeing 737-800 (N3739P)
Economy Class – Seat 21A

Boarding: 0525 (Gate S8)
Push Back: 0557
Take Off Roll: 0608 (Runway 16L)
Top of Descent: 0819
Touch Down: 0838 (Runway 16L)
Shut Down: 0846 (Gate D11)

Once “Sky Priority” was called for boarding, I was maybe the third person through in this group. One thing I will give Delta, they sure do have a lot of groups for boarding. I saw someone with a Group 5 and that would of been after Pre Boarding Families, First class, Sky Priority, then starting groups 1,2,3,4 and finally 5. Thats like 8 stages! I would hate to be that person wanting to try and get some bin space.

From Dallas Mileage Run

First 737 flight for 2013 and it looked ever so basic inside. No seatback tv, very uncomfortable looking seats and antiqutated entertainment options (aka 1 audio channel worked, yep just 1). My view outside was pitch black, the seats were cramped. The only thing running through my head right that second was “if we de ice, im screwed”. By the time everyone was onboard and we were pushing back ready to go we were pretty much right on time. But that would be good as I am sure they pad the schedules pretty well in winter. Fortunately we didn’t de ice and we were #1 for take off (as per the flight crews annoucement) and with a pilot with a lead foot, we were speeding down towards the 16s and without even waiting they turned to 16L and hit the sky!

There wasn’t much to this flight really, I read my book to try and wake up a bit more, coffee, water, my horrible stale tasting bagel and more coffee. Seemed ok to me! I wasn’t going to connect to wifi at this point, I wanted to wake up. Hell not even really any chance to look out the window as it was all cloud below. Just meant I could enjoy my book, my music and chill out some. Which is what I did. We made good time and soon enough, the nose went down and we were on approach to Salt Lake City.

We were coming in early so I was happy, my flight connection was looking so good I was considering hitting the skyclub for some coffee and hopefully a piece of fruit (maybe an extra piece for later even) to finish off my breakfast. We landed with mountain ranges and snow capped peaks all around. Totally different to what I just left and something I have never really seen before. We passed what looked like 2 Skyteam painted aircraft and you could tell this was a Delta hub. There was Delta jets of every shape, size and form going everywhere!

From Dallas Mileage Run
From Dallas Mileage Run

On the ground reality hit big time. My next flight was Delayed. At present only 15 mins so that wasn’t going to be to bad, it might mean a bit of a job through MSP or if we don’t de ice maybe we can make up some time but initially I was ok. I strolled through Salt Lake City airport (which actually looked pretty cool) and headed for the SkyClub. I was grilled a little bit on entry but not much more than the other people around me and i was told “your flights only 15 minutes delayed but keep an eye on the monitors”. It seems they don’t do annoucements here. One thing I had noticed as I strolled past the gate I was meant to be going out of was a 767 was sitting there. Figuring that was not ours as I was meant to be on a 320 and not been told of an aircraft swap something was up. I checked the screens and the aircraft at the gate was going to Atlanta, at 0940. 25 mins before we were due to depart, 5 mins after we were due to board. This is NOT good.

From Dallas Mileage Run

My brain started to think things over, my connection in MSP looked extremely doubtful. I wasn’t in the Skyclub long, figuring that the monitors had to be wrong and they would gate change us again. So figured in case I needed to move quickly I should be out in the terminal. I went for a 2nd cup of coffee and the machine broke down, so after 1 cup of coffee and about a ¼ cup of not as watery oatmeal as seattle, I grabbed an apple, a couple of biscoff as emergency supplies (hey they are tasty, don’t judge) and some trail mix to finish off my breakfast (dried pineapple and paw paw… yum!).

The delay was definately going ahead now, they announced that the aircraft still had not arrived and that it would be ok we wouldnt be all that much later than expected. Apart from the fact that the aircraft didn’t pull up till almost the time we were meant to be departing and that boarding wasn’t going to be possible till everyone else was off. This was not going to be pretty. People were milling about acting like gate lice (me being one of them). I was really wondering what to do. Derek (from Crankyconcierge) called me and we discussed my options.

Option 1. Continue to MSP, reasses on the ground as more options for reroute as could hub hop to DFW if need be
Option 2. Bail now, possibly get put on a direct flight, lose points

Considering I figured I had more options out of MSP i went for it. I had access to GoGo on the flight so we could work on alternatives while in the air.

Boarding was called and the scrum began. First class was on quick then the Sky Priority turn seemed like everyone and their dog was allowed to board. Funny thing was, there was a dog in the queue! By the time i got down to the aircraft door there was a long long back up. Everyone had been trying to put stuff away and the queue stretched all the way back. O well, I was comitted now, no turning back.

From Dallas Mileage Run

I stowed my bag in the compartment and shoved the back pack under the seat and although this aircraft was way more basic, the legroom was heaps better. An inch or two of pitch is always appreciated. I gpt myself ready for the flight and it was a pretty boring boarding process to be honest. What was interesting (yet scary) was it started snowing while we were on the ground. This is where my brain was thinking “if we deice i am royally screwed” as I could see the queues for De Ice out my window. As we pushed back we were passed by the Skyteam 738 so that kept me interested for a few minutes, snapping photos. Everything moving about was Delta. Delta everywhere! We didn’t de ice thank god and we were heading for the runway pretty quickly. No wait at the threshold as there was no one around but us, it was desolate. I don’t know if they sent us out there for punishment or not but we had taxiied a while.

Pretty slow take off roll but once we passed V1 and into Rotate it was a spirited climb and we passed 10,000ft pretty damn quick. The pilots were on to try and make up some time that is for sure. My job this morning though was to get my butt online and get some back up ready to go. Well that was the plan anyway. Gogo inflight was active (which is probably one of the best things ever) and I connected on and got to work straight away planning out what to do.

From Dallas Mileage Run
From Dallas Mileage Run

Pretty much my quickest way to Dallas if i missed the flight was just sit and wait, I would have about 20 minutes to cross the entire airort from one side to the other but I was up the run that was for sure. Things were definately going to be interesting on the ground. By the time I had worked on all of that I spent the last 20 minutes or so prior to descent in getting myself ready for the run, planning the route through the airport. I could of even changed over to my runners but didnt even think of it at the time.

From Dallas Mileage Run

As we desceded into MSP it was a quiet time onboard, I was focused on getting off that aircraft, we landed with about 25 minutes till my flight departs but by the time we got to the gate it was 20 minutes. Then we sat and waited. I did everything I could to get to the front of the aircraft as quickly as possible but I got held up behind a lady who was just determined to block me. Most people were letting me past.

Once I got past her and out into the boarding lane, it was on. RUN RUN RUN! I took off at pace, wearing the wrong shoes, with a backpack on my back and my crumpler bag over my shoulder. Initially I made a right turn out of the gate area and the gate numbers started going up, woops! Wrong way. Turned around and sped up. I was yelling (not that loudly though) “excuse me” as much as I could, or “On your left” “on your right” just like I did when I was running at home. All my running was paying off. Though I barely made it off the F Concourse before I started to struggle. From F I hung a right to flick around the F-D connector as that was the “long way” and then within 50 metres hung a left turn onto the Main connector and tried to pick up as much pace as I could. I turned right onto the C Concourse on pace, breathing ok and thank god it wasn’t that crowded. I did have to dodge people coming off the tram for a few seconds but that was ok.

As I went further down the C Concourse (I was at C1 heading for C19) by this stage I think I was a good half a kilometre down, probably half way along at this point. The moving walkways were working, So I used them as their was barely any people on them and used them kind of as a short cut, not for the speed advantage but more the fact for the clear shot down them. When I hit C10 thats when I started to really feel it. I had about 10 minutes to go and knew that any minute now they were going to close that off. I got to C15 and I heard it for the first time. I was being paged. “Last and Final Page for Mr Malcom Muir on Flight DL5017 to Dallas Fort Worth, this is the final page and this flight will depart without you if you are not here in 3 minutes.” I had 3 minutes and 4 gates… I HAD IT! in 3 minutes i can clear over half a kilometre at an average pace. I picked up my speed as the way was clear, I didn’t have time to say anything to a staff member to tell them I was coming, I just ran. I hit the gate area and heard “You made it”

Delta Air Lines – DL5017 (Operated by Expressjet)

At this point I was totally out of it. The gate staff asked me if I had a boarding pass, all I could do was nod. She said “You can take a breath, your here, don’t worry”. Thankfully I had that printed copy of my boarding pass as it meant I didn’t have to fumble with my phone. I stumbled down the jetbridge, puffing and panting thinking that I would need to gate check my bag but was told not to worry about it.

From Dallas Mileage Run

As I stepped onboard I got a dirty look from one of the cabin crew, the other greeted me ok, but the dirty looks from the passengers,…. wow. Just bad. I was puffing so much and at that moment so damn sweaty I just dumped my jacket off and threw my bag in the overhead and begged for some water before I passed out. The grumpy looking guy said he would bring me some water as soon as I took my seat. I plonked my butt down and just felt like passing out. My hands were shaking so bad I could barely keep my hands steady to take my usual cabin shots (of course I did this for my readers… don’t you feel special).

Within seconds of me boarding, the doors were shut and we pushed back. I couldn’t believe I had made it with 5 mins to spare till an on time departure. Glad I could help Delta keep that on time percentage. As we pushed back we taxiied out towards the same runway I had just landed on 20 minutes ago and straight past the US Airways America West livery aircraft. I had mixed it up for a Delta Aircraft to start with and was a little bit suprised to see it. Right when I don’t have my SLR with me!

The CRJ has one benefit I do like (which so many people don’t). It is small, light and compact. Which means it has a “sprited” take off ability and the pilots today were showing off all right. We were the first in line infront of a Great Lakes Beechcraft 1900D and the pilots got their clearances way ahead of time because they didn’t stop, they didn’t even slow down to turn onto the active. Like any good driver knows you brake prior to the turn and as you turn you accelerate out of it. Well these guys took it one step further, they accelerated into the turn and as they turned out onto the active and straightened up, I am pretty sure they were well at speed by this stage.

We were in the air moments later, climbing out through the clouds leaving the snow behind. No De ice required 3/3 flights. Score! I was really impressed by Delta at this point. The service was rolled out a short time later and I took the time on this flight to disconnect myself and calm down. I was lucky enough to have a row to myself (albeit just two seats) and decided I would just take it. The flight was going to be comfortable enough (though the CRJ seats for me never are that comfortable) for 2 hours in a regional jet. Laptop out, trip report started.

Thankfully I had taken that apple from the Skyclub as that was my lunch really. An apple and a couple of biscoff (which have I mentioned are freaking AWESOME!). I had asked for more water and a Diet Coke, however all I got was the water and the biscoff were thrown at me by the grumpy dude. Seriously! I just gulped down what I could and a bit later asked for more water Figured it was all I was going to get.

From Dallas Mileage Run

The flight was pretty boring otherwise, the descent was pretty quick but it was clouds all the way down to the deck. Literally down to the deck. I could see the flaps going out, still in clouds, gear comes down, still in clouds, we dropped out of the clouds right above the piano keys to the runway and as they flared in for a landing I could finally see things around me. My greeting to DFW was great though, sitting there right next to the Qantas 747-400ER from Sydney was the new American Airlines 777-300ER. My first shot of the painted 77W and its from inside a CRJ in crappy weather with my point and shoot. Either way… I didn’t care, I had seen it and It actually looked pretty good in my opininon.

By the time we reached the gate in the E pier, I was just starting to feel tired. I was hungry and still needed more liquids, as I was coughing a bit (but that was probably also a side affect of sitting in a metal tube all day). I had touched down in Dallas 12 hours after I had left. We pulled up at the gate and I wasn’t in a rush to get off as my hotel was only 1 terminal over, although I was a bit excited to try and get a better shot of the AA 77W on the skylink over to my room. I passed the Skyclub on the way to the tram and sussed out my morning plans so that I could stumble around DFW without needing to think to much.

The Skylink tram runs around the airport connecting all the terminals and it is airside so this was awesome for me as I didn’t to leave the airport and find a shuttle in the rain or anything, I stayed dry the entire time getting over to the D terminal and the Grand Hyatt.

I knew when I moved over to the USA as a Virgin Australia Velocity Gold member that requalifying was NOT going to be easy. Last year I managed to keep myself in Gold with a lovely few double status credit promos and a couple of really cheap Business class runs. This time though, it was going to be tougher. No double status credit promos to look forward to and the fact that it was going to be a struggle to qualify off “partner airlines”. I knew this was not going to be easy on my butt but at least with Flyertalk’s Mileage Run forum to help me find the right deals, the research would be easier. I came across a nice deal on Flyertalk one day for Seattle to Dallas and it allowed 2 connections in each direction. This was good, one its out of my home city so no positioning, 2 it allows multiple segments for cheap, so although not a lengthy flight point wise, the more segments the more status credits.

Thanks to a couple of guides on Hack My Trip and Wandering Aremean I used the ITA Matrix and Hipmunk to book in my mileage run and it came out looking like this:

2013 Delta Mileage Run #1 Map

Thats Seattle to Salt Lake City to Minneapolis to Dallas to Memphis to Minneapolis to Seattle. An overnight in Dallas was required but it wasn’t all that bad. The problem was, 45-60 minute connections everywhere. In Australia, no big deal, over here… this could get interesting. Considering its February, its Winter. There is likely to be snow all over the place in Salt Lake & Minneapolis and possible storms or fog in Seattle, it was going to be a battle. I booked it anyway for shits and giggles. The exact flights would be:

Saturday 9th Feb 2013
Seattle to Salt Lake City – DL1634 – 0600/0905 – Boeing 737-800
Salt Lake City to Minneapolis St Paul – DL996 – 0949/1328 – Airbus A320
Minneapolis St Paul to Dallas Fort Worth – DL5017 – 1415/1649 – Canadair CRJ-700 (operated by ExpressJet)

Sunday 10th Feb 2013
Dallas Fort Worth to Memphis – DL3357 – 0615-0745 – Canadair CRJ-900 (operated by Pinnacle)
Memphis to Minneapolis St Paul – DL1064 – 0830/1045 – McDonnell Douglas MD-88
Minneapolis St Paul to Seattle – DL1753 – 1140/1330 – Airbus A320

Next stop… hotel choosing. Figured Dallas Airport area would be ideal, I hit up the usual industry rate sites, first thing that picks my interest is the Grand Hyatt Dallas Fort Worth which is located on top of one of the terminals. The rate was significantly lower than anything else with Hyatt and majority of the other ones were not nearly as good. So I went with it!. Hotel set, Flights set. I had one thing on my mind… BBQ! So I looked into getting to a BBQ joint near the airport, cabs probably cost me like $15 each way to the closest. I checked National for a cheap last minute car deal. $11 for the night… CHOICE! I would barely have it 3 or 4 hours but it was cheaper than cabs. So I booked that to.

Time was getting closer, the impending doom was learing, so rather than worry about the whole ordeal with rebooking etc, I would let someone else handle it. I sent off my details to Brett @ Crankyconcierge and his first reaction was a WTF! But yeah I knew it coming into it this wasn’t going to be easy. With that in mind I had a couple of rules for them about handling any rebookings:

1. Has to be Delta Metal or this mileage run is useless
2. I don’t care how many segments I have to fly, as long as I get to Dallas
3. Last resort, I can go on another airline

With that set, I was fully good to go for what was going to be my first REAL mileage run.

So I finally managed to get all my LAX spotting photos finished and touched up. Took me almost 2 solid days plus a few days mid week to get them all done. I culled 1500 down to 165 so thats pretty good really, about a 10% hit rate (thank god I do not shoot film!). I was going to try something a little different but it failed to work.

So instead here is a selection of my photos from the trip.. including the most lucky of shots lately!

Sunday 20th January 2013

After spending what little remaining time in the LA Sunshine spotting and going backwards and forwards along Aviation Blvd between the Proud Bird and 93rd Ave to get shots as flights approached the north or south runways it was time to reverse my process from Saturday morning. I filled the car up (20c off a gallon in LA at Shell thanks to Fred Meyer even though back home in Seattle it’s not more than 10c off a gallon) and dropped the car back at National & within moments I was on a shuttle back to T3. This time the shuttle was absolutely crammed full of people, but it wasn’t long before we got to T3. As we rolled past T2 I saw something that would be awesome if I could get a clear shot of it, but that’s a little secret for now.

Showed up at T3 and came into the terminal and it was packed solid. Which was to be expected considering Virgin Australia had landed a number of flights on the ground about an hour or so ago and there would be people connecting on to destinations unknown. I had priority check in, though there was nothing priority about it. I spent longer in this queue without even being recognized at one point than people were going through the normal or self-serve queues. I guess that serves me right. But this was the start of all my problems. About the only thing going for it at this point was the fact that I wasn’t charged for a bag, which was pretty cool.

When I finally got my boarding pass it had a B seat on it, which had me in the middle, no priority markings or anything on it so this was not going to go well. I queried about why my seat allocation had changed and was told “can’t fix it, needs to be done upstairs”, I checked about the priority security which I should get as well, was told “it will be fine”. So I head off to security and being told that I can’t use it because it’s not on my boarding pass (hell I actually had to ask where priority security was because it wasn’t even marked). After fighting with the lady for a minute or so she finally let me through so after that point, security didn’t take too long. I just wanted to get through it all quickly and without a fuss, so I submitted to the nude o scope. Once through, I repacked my trash and headed for the customer service desks to fix my seat. Sadly though they told me they couldn’t fix my seat till 30 mins prior to departure AKA when boarding began and that they can’t guarantee a single thing. So much for being a Gold Member on this partner!

I decided to just give up and hit up the Virgin America Lounge which I had access to, but wasn’t sure if I was going to have to fight my way in. I was doing a review for AirlineReporter on the lounge anyway but I had given them pre warning on that but there was no sponsorship to get into the lounge, that was down to the access from Virgin Australia. It was painless and not much had changed since I was there last time when I went down for the day and David and I talked our way in. The changes that had happened was mainly the food etc. was a bit more plentiful compared to last time and also the signage had changed from Virgin Australia to Virgin America. I managed to while away my short time in the lounge (about 45 minutes) taking photos, gorging on the most yummy cookies I have had in a while, and spotting out the big picture windows.

When it was about 35 mins prior to departure I headed back to the customer service desk to get my seat fixed up but was told I had to wait till exactly 30 minutes prior, and wait I did. I stood there and at exactly 1205 I handed back my boarding pass and said “its 30 minutes prior now) and at that exact second they called for boarding. She reissued my boarding pass and weirdly rather than destroy the old one, she stapled the two together.

Virgin America VX783
Los Angeles to Seattle Tacoma
1235-1515
Airbus A320 (N846VA)
Main Cabin – Seat 16A

Boarding: 1204 (Gate 36)
Push Back: 1234
Take Off Roll: 1244 (Runway 24L)
Top of Descent: 1438
Touch Down: 1500 (Runway 16R)
Shut Down: 1505 (Gate A4)

By the time I managed to get to the gate, they had just called Main Cabin Select passengers and since I was apparently going to be Boarding group D since again Virgin America had failed to deliver what they should have, it could have been a long wait. When they called boarding group B and all Elevate Gold and Silver members I figured I would give it a go and see what happened. She didn’t even look at my pass just scanned it and on I went, not so much as a comment. I wouldn’t normally have done that but was pretty unimpressed with VX up to this point today.
I took my seat, stowed my stuff and settled in. The plan for this flight was different to the last. Whereas the flight down I was working online, this was going to be an offline flight, focusing on watching the game to see who made the Superbowl and writing the lounge review. The flight was 100% full and the couple sitting next to me never said a word.

We took off out over the beach and when we turned back around and headed north, I waved goodbye to the sunshine and warmth, as we were headed north to the cold and more than likely rain. The flight itself was pretty boring really. I worked; I snacked on a banana and some almonds for “lunch” (since I had eaten like a dozen cookies in the lounge I wasn’t all that hungry and frankly a little bit ashamed of my gorging). We passed direct over Portland just as the game was finishing up and we began to descend. A high majority of people on the flight were doing the same thing).

We came in over Gig Harbor, Tacoma and then a right turn over the University district before lining up for the 16s. Up till this point it had been nice and sunny (but obviously cold) but as we neared SeaTac we descended into the fog bank and I farewelled Mt Rainer again. We hit 16R fairly smoothly and had a quick taxi (or at least as quick as can be expected from that side of the airport) over to another new gate for me in the A terminal. I had to wait a little while to get off being up the back but I wasn’t in too much of a rush.

Once off and into the terminal I think I walked the wrong way to the baggage hall and when I eventually found the right carousel my bag was already going around. I dressed back into my Seattle attire (aka layered back up) and headed for the shuttle to reverse the process. Within an hour of touching down I was taking the off ramp from I405,heading to the grocery store for the weeks shopping and planning how to do that as quickly as possible to avoid a) freezing to death in almost freezing temps and b) missing as little as possible of the New England game.

After dropping off the Car I headed to the store to get some supplies and then off to the hotel to check in and drop my stuff (and leave my hat in my bag at this point because I am an idiot). After looking around and finding a half decent rate at this new hotel, I figured I would give it a try. A few months ago the Hyatt Place LAX/El Segundo opened just off Imperial Highway in El Segundo. To be honest its barely off the Airport grounds, it is just outside the little cluster that all the other airport hotels are located, but still close to everything so it’s not a 10-20 minute drive away.

Location wise it is pretty convenient. 2 blocks away from a full on supermarket, about a block away from a Metro Railway Station (the Green Line) and being that it is new build, it is in a quiet street located away from all the traffic on Imperial Highway/Sepulveda Blvd. The hotel is of that usual modernist design that makes it look like an office block from the outside which is kind of weird but hey, I don’t mind as it’s what is on the inside that counts right?

I rolled up and parked outside and as soon as I walked in I was greeted. The lobby looked pretty good and within moments I was checked in and explained breakfast times etc. I headed on up to my room on the 5th floor (the top floor) and I didn’t even bother asking about a runway view, considering the buildings around it would have blocked it and it would probably be dark by the time I got back, who cares.

The room was all the way at the end of the hallway away from the lifts (so at least they do pay attention to Gold Passport requests) and I wasn’t sure if I got this room thanks to the Platinum upgrade or not as it was a corner room and felt big, but then I haven’t experienced a room at a Hyatt Place before so couldn’t say. But it felt like it was a better room to me. Inside the room was nice, and modern. Spacious, yet not overly so.

The bathroom though was pretty good with a big shower and sliding door rather than curtain or moving door so it didn’t impede on anything. My biggest complaint about the bathroom though, was the soaps etc. were on the outside of the shower area more in the main room so if you forgot them when you went for a shower (as I did) you are going to have to traipse all the way back out (and drip water everywhere probably).

Plenty of towels and so many power outlets it wasn’t funny. 4 in total by the side of the bed alone! (Two on either side). A mini bar fridge, but no mini bar inside, is perfect for putting in my water and stuff. Connectivity on the TV including a USB plug and a HDMI port, though when I plugged in my usb, nothing worked (sigh). Free Wi-Fi onsite and it was password protected which was a bit unusual considering it’s offered free for everyone.

An outdoor pool area at the hotel and a 24 hour basic cardio gym were pretty common and a full on guest self-serve laundry rounded out the facilities. The lobby has the breakfast area but during the day this becomes more of a common area and there is a small café/bar area that is served by the check in staff.

The biggest win for me about this hotel was the breakfast the next morning. I grabbed breakfast just before heading off for more spotting so had dropped everything in the car and would then have breakfast, check out and hit the road all within minutes. Breakfast is free at all Hyatt Places and they call it the “a.m. Kitchen Skillet” breakfast. It is kind of a mix of an easy take away breakfast so you can package it up and take it back to your room if you want, or eat it down in the common areas. Starbucks coffee (though not the usual blend) was on offer and plenty of food. The usual continental offerings (Toast, fruit, cereal etc.) and the hot wasn’t bad.

Hot food was a choice of 4 items. French toast, Steel Cut Oatmeal or 2 different kinds of Muffin Cheese & Egg or Bacon and Egg (with cheese as well). This is not your usual 5 star hotel breakfasts but it was good, filling and simple and the oatmeal was freaking awesome! The thing for me that kicked off the experience at breakfast was Kim who was the staff member looking after it all. Nothing was too much trouble for her at all and she was always there helping to get more coffee or fruit or pastries or anything really. Plus being a communal area they had a few big screen TVs with the morning news going on as it was inauguration day in DC and I had a few comments about that game playing that day.

Check out was simple and done quickly. I was soon on the road for more spotting. Pretty simple!

Saturday 19th January 2013

My first trip for 2013 and no need to be up at OMG o Clock. Just about 30 minutes earlier than my standard wake up, but as I drove out of Bothell heading towards SeaTac it still felt like OMG o clock as it was still pitch black. Ahh the joys of winter in the northern hemisphere.

Managed good time on the freeway as I trucked it south, parked the truck and within 45 minutes of leaving the apartment I was pretty much on a shuttle almost to the door of the terminal. Todays flight meant a drop off at Island 3, up the escalators and over the Skybridge and into the Southern end of the terminal. I found the Virgin America check in (which had moved north a bit compared to where they previously were) was empty, so I walked straight on up to the premium line, but was actually helped by a general agent. Didn’t really worry me all that much, checked in, bag tagged (though no priority baggage with Virgin America) and I was off to security.

Security was a mess. I tried to skip the main checkpoint behind check in (Checkpoint 2 at the A/S Gate Connector) however my dodge was closed so it was all through the one checkpoint unfortunately. Even with jumping the queue it still meant a good 15 minutes, thankfully I had planned ahead of time for this.

I got all the way to the front of the queue and still had a good 45 minutes before my flight was due to board and I didn’t feel like going through the Nude O Scope so I did something I had never done before. I opted out. I got the dirtiest look from the TSA agent on duty and she started yelling “MALE ASSIST I NEED A MALE ASSIST”. Part of me wanted to make a few dirty jokes to her but I kept my mouth shut & waited. To which I was then escorted around and got my first TSA Grope of 2013 (and probably not my last). The TSA agent who did my “Enhanced Pat Down” was pretty nice about it and explained it all calmly and was gentle about it all. Even commented on my watch saying he liked the look of it and asked where I got it. All in all a “pleasant” security experience.

After getting myself redressed I turned around to where Starbucks was located and the line for a coffee was as long as security! So gave up on that idea straight away. Decided to just slowly make my way out to the end of the A pier. But along the way I managed to pass Coffee Bean and there was no one waiting, so I still got my coffee. Took my time getting out to the gate and waiting in front of me was my ride to LAX (albeit surrounded by fog). Lined up next to it was 2 flights to Hawaii leaving around the same time so I was super jealous, but 3 flights to the sunshine in a row, what are the odds.

Virgin America VX780
Seattle-Tacoma to Los Angeles
0900-1135
Airbus A320 (N635VA)
Main Cabin Select – Seat 10A

Boarding: 0824 (Gate A13)
Push Back: 0911
Take Off Roll: 0930 (Runway 16L)
Top of Descent: 1115
Touch Down: 1138 (Runway 24R)
Shut Down: 1145 (Gate 31A)

Boarding was called for First Class guests and people with special needs (I am special does that count?) and then it was Main Cabin Select (MCS) guests, so I was quickly up and headed through the gate down to the flight. Little bit of a back up at the door with all the first class guests ahead of me, but I didn’t mind waiting 😉

I settled into my exit row seat and and got my stuff together, I was hoping the seat next to me would go out empty. Nothing better than an exit row window with a spare seat next to you in economy. Since I was in MCS entertainment was free, food was free and I had the half decent seats as well. Since it was breakfast I tried to tie up my order now, but the system wasn’t yet active. I had to wait 🙁

But as the aircraft slowly filled and we got a brief by the very cute sounding pilot up front (2nd female captain on a VX flight for me!). She said something that most people would dread but I was kind of excited about. We were going to get deiced. I had never been in an aircraft that gets deiced and they did ours at the gate once we closed the door and they took away the jet bridge. It was kind of cool as they sprayed around the orange goopy looking substance all over the wings and body of the aircraft. Once that was done, we pushed back and headed north to the 16 thresholds.

We didn’t wait all that long in line and as soon as we hit the active, the pilots gave it gas and off we went. When we got up above the extremely solid cloud deck it was amazing to see sky. Beautiful blue sky!! Something I had not seen in almost a week. As we climbed out I was just plodding away taking photos out the window (once the crap had cleared off my window) and browsing what was on tv (though I wasn’t all that interested). As soon as we got to the right height, I heard the usual chimes and saw the Electronic Devices light go off, and out came my new Chromebook.

My plan for this flight was simple. Coffee, Breakfast and Internet. I had 12 passes on Gogo thanks to the Chromebook and another one up my sleeve, so figured it was time to get some work done. So I logged in and within minutes I was tweeting away! Awesome++ Eventually my coffee showed up and so did my breakfast of Granola & Yoghurt (though it was a pitiful amount of it! Even United gave a better similar breakfast option) but the water I did order never showed and when asked again, I was ignored. It took another 45 minutes and 2 more orders using the system to get that small lowly bottle of water.

I managed to do quite a bit of work and after being fed, watered and grabbing a packet of nuts for the road (thanks to all food being free) we were soon descending into LAX. I hadn’t even really noticed what was going on, the flight just kind of disappeared. Pretty soon we were descending in from the north doing a long loop around for a line up onto 24R. Past the Hollywood sign in the distance, the blue sky looked so good and the temp at around 75 sounded like heaven.

We touched down on 24R and taxied all the way back to T3 past the Pacific Ramp (where all the Qantas, Virgin Aus & Air NZ park during the day) and the SQ A380 at TBIT. We pulled into our gate and eventually I made it off the aircraft after letting everyone else past me. It wasn’t too bad at all. I went downstairs to grab my bag into what feels like the most ghetto terminal ever and once my bag finally showed up (I swear it was one of the last ones off, thanks VX) I headed out and had to run for the National Rental Car Shuttle.

Within 5 minutes I was at the National lot, up the escalators where it is always a tough decision picking out my car, and eventually I decided on what looked like an ok choice but was in fact… a piece of crap. But that’s the luck of the draw and I only have myself to blame. I knew I should of grabbed the Ford Escape :/

Well it is that time of the year again. I am going back over the last year and looking at a whole heap of things that have happened. One of my big things in life is Travel and looking back over the last year dredges up a heap of memories. But I wouldn’t be a true Avgeek if I didn’t keep a log of all of my flights during the year.

The flying wasn’t all of the travelling I did but it does form the largest form of it. But it is always interesting to back over some of the stats of my travel from the previous year. Now 2012 would not be as large as 2011, but I sure did cover some ground!

2012 Flight Map

As you can see in the map, theres a fare amount of distance covered by some of those lines. What you can’t see is the repeated trips to places like LAX, SFO, SYD & MEL. All in all in 2012 I took 34 flights with only 3 “Long Haul” flights (BNE-LAX, BFI-DOH & DOH-IAH) the rest of them were all lovely short segments.

Lets look at some of the geeky stats:

Total Segments: 34
Total Miles: 46676
Shortest Flight: Cleveland to Dayton – 162mi
Longest Flight: Doha to Houston – 8047mi

New Countries: Qatar
New Airports: DAY, CLE, DOH, BFI, LAS, ROK, IAH

New Airlines: QR, AS, QQ, EV, XR, OO, AX
Most Common Airline: Virgin Australia

New Aircraft: 787, CRJ-700, ERJ-145, CRJ-200, Fokker 100, 777-200LR, 737-900
Most Common Aircraft – Boeing 737 (all variants)

That is a lot of geekiness right there. I do keep all of this. But add onto this the move over here to the USA as “Travel”, along with several trips over the border to Vancouver (but since I didn’t fly it doesn’t count).

I did my first ever mileage runs (covered in a different look back) but then I got to fly in some awesome aircraft this year. Out of all of that I would definately have to say the 787 was the highlight. There was trips for work, trips for leisure, trips for spotting and trips for points. All rolled into one and you have a pretty epic year of travelling.

Conclusion

I would have to admit that to say that having to take 4 days off leave for this trip was not worth it would be an utter lie. This was probably one of the most amazing trips of my life. I managed to add a whole heap of firsts to my log book for this trip:

* First Flight on a 787
* First Flight on a 777-200LR
* First Flight on Qatar Airways
* First time to Houston Intercontinental (IAH)
* First time to Doha (DOH)
* First time to Boeing Field (BFI)
* First time in the Middle East
* First ever Delivery Flight

Some of these things I doubt I will ever be able to do again. I mean how often will I get access like this as well. In the time I was away I flew a total of 17328 miles spent over 31 hours in the air and that was only 3 flights. Normally that kind of distance would be spent on a whole heap of flights maybe 6 or 7. But not this time around.

I don’t really know how to top this trip though. Sure I have had some epic trips in the past, and I still have some things to tick off of my bucket list (Around the world in first class I think is the next big one) but all the sacrifices I am going to have to make now that I am back (not that this trip cost me much, but more the fact that my waist line took a bit of a hammering, but I expected that) were worth it. Experiencing new cultures, new foods, new scenes all in a matter of a few days, it is a travelers dream.

Being able to get on a delivery flight was a dream; it is one of those experiences the Aviation Geeks like me just drool over. An inaugural is one thing, but a delivery (or ferry flight whatever you want to call it) is a true privilege. Experiencing the brand new products, new service, all on a brand new aircraft being delivered half way across the world, getting to meet some media in the process, learn from them and being treated like legitimate media was an honor and something I will cherish.

All those things touted by the 787 program by Boeing, the bigger windows, the better cabin pressure and humidity thanks to the composites used. It is all true. I really did feel much better after the landing in Doha than coming back from Doha on the 777. Don’t get me wrong the 777 service and crew were fantastic as well, but I just didn’t physically feel the same and I had been in the air pretty much with a similar time frame/day. I had never really believed it before, but now I do. If I had the choice of a 787 vs. any other aircraft, then yes I would take it without a second thought.

In the future I hope that I get more of these opportunities as I move forward with the sideline stuff. I really have to thank David at AirlineReporter for the opportunity to go, because if it wasn’t for him not being able to, I definitely would never have had the chance to go. Also thanks go to Qatar Airways and their social media/media team. They planned and arranged all of this and for that I am truly thankful. All the hard work they would have had to of gone to for this trip and to invite a lowly blogger along (although I have been promoted to “Lead Correspondent” now) deserves the biggest praise I can give. So with that, I say thank you and next time if I can fly Qatar Airways, I won’t give it a second thought.

Sunday 18th November 2012

Up early, hitting the gym to make sure that I don’t feel guilty before what was to be a truly epic return home. I had been looking forward to this morning just as much as the flight over. So with a good 5k run in the gym, this would mean I could really enjoy myself today.

I checked out of the hotel and met up with my contact at Qatar Airways who was saying farewell and dropping me at the airport. It was a bit saddening to leave Qatar as I had a fantastic time and had enjoyed the warm weather so much I didn’t really want to head home to the Seattle winter. The weather wasn’t the real reason for not wanting to go home, but it’s a good excuse, right?

From Qatar Trip

I was dropped in front of the Qatar Airways Premium Terminal and instantly a porter was there to help with the bags and take them into the check in area. It was surreal to have someone help with my bags like that as any time I had previously flown Business I still had to schlep my bags through the terminal. Pretty awesome so far. Check in was a breeze I barely even spoke, just handed the lovely lady my passport, told her I was headed to Houston and I went back to chatting to my contact at Qatar Airways. Next thing I know she’s handing me my boarding pass wishing me a safe journey. I quickly remembered I needed a bag tag for the swag bag and I was given not only the usual paper one you would expect but a lovely plastic one (that I kept for later).

Immigration was its usual Qatari breeze, hand over passport; smile for the birdie (look into the camera) and then stamp stamp off you go. Security was a bit longer due to only 2 channels open but in saying that, it was still not even 5 minutes, if that. Got to love this experience so far. So once the dignity dance was done and I was all dressed, I headed up the escalators, leaving the duty free to later.

At the top of the escalators, some staff were checking everyone’s boarding pass, not sure why as I mean it’s not as if you could be in this terminal without one, but I think they were keeping a record of the flights people were on to make sure that anyone who came in, eventually went out. Either way after they checked my boarding pass, they pointed me to the left, wished me a wonderful visit and off I went, past the cloak room (all the lockers were taken), past the nursery, past the games room, pass the smoking room, past the Doctors Clinic. Say what now. A Doctors Clinic in the lounge. Crazy! This place was like phenomenally awesome.

I finally made it actually into the lounge and it was just full of people. There were so many people in there it wasn’t funny. But it was the morning peak time with flights landing from all over Africa and the Middle East heading out to Europe and the USA (All the USA flights to New York, Washington DC & Houston all go out within 45 minutes of each other). I managed to find a single spot in the dining area to grab some breakfast and after a couple of poached eggs on toast. I headed off in search of somewhere more relaxing to finish my breakfast. Some fruit (god the dates out here in the Middle East are yum) and a couple of fresh pastries should round things out nicely (I grabbed a brioche bun thinking it was something else, but it was still good).

I settled in for my morning ritual. Coffee, emails, relax, switch off my brain. Could there be a better way to start the day than this. O did I mention that I was in an airport, with a half decent view and if I wanted to, could go and have a lie down on one of the many couches before my flight. I could seriously spend all day in this lounge and I wish I had of come a bit earlier to really relax and enjoy it. The first class side even has a day spa so THAT I could enjoy.

About 15 minutes before boarding I packed up my stuff and headed down to the Duty Free store to see if there was something I could buy to use up the last of my Rials. After browsing, there was nothing that tickled my fancy and after confirming with the staff that there was a different selection onboard, I bought a really cheap gift for a friend and headed towards the gate area. I wouldn’t really call it a gate area either; it was just a desk with a check in terminal as you headed directly onto a bus that took you to your aircraft.

The flight was called for boarding like 50 mins prior but I mean we still had to go through secondary screening (I hate that) and then off to the aircraft by bus. After going through security again, redressing (again) and this time having to remove my watch for some reason, even though I have never had to do that before. I was able to redress myself (while trying to stop the security from moving my stuff around without me seeing it) and get onto the bus. Once the bus was full (there’s only a dozen or so seats) the doors shut and off along the tarmac we went. Past an Air Arabia A320, past a whole heap of Qatar Airways jets, big and small. Past an Emirates 777-300ER, right up to door 2L of our 777-200LR. There was a bus already at the rear steps for the Economy passengers, and literally as we pulled up, they opened the doors and the hordes flowed up the rear steps.

However I was first onboard our aircraft, greeted with a smile, and I snapped away while the cabin was empty. I was in the mini cabin between the galley and economy. It was a good size cabin, 3 rows of 6 (2-2-2) but even then it is only marginally smaller than the 4 rows up the front. As everyone boarded I was greeted by the Purser and he introduced himself and offered any assistance. He mentioned that he had seen I was on the delivery flight and I explained I had loved it and was looking forward to more flights with Qatar Airways. A very true statement.

After many more photos, a pre departure beverage, handing out of all the goodies (pillows, slippers, socks, menus, amenity kits, pajamas etc.) we buttoned up and the steps were pushed back away from the aircraft. We pushed back a bit late waiting on paperwork to be finalized. It was coming to the end of the morning peak but still there was plenty of aircraft making their way to the takeoff points. Two Qatar Air Force Mirage 2000s taxied past us (unsure if just landed or heading to take off) and we eventually joined the long queue. We held for a while with other aircraft taking off ahead of us including a Qatar Air Force Dornier Alpha jet, a Westland Lynx landed and then it was our turn.

We turned onto Runway 33, the GE90s (which I was sitting on top off) spooled up, sucking in anything not tied down in the entire middle east (I still love the sound and feeling of these engines) and down the runway we rocketed. It was a fairly long roll as we were bound to be heavy with fuel. As we pulled out from Doha I wished it was not going to end as we pulled away from the city, back over the desert heading towards Europe. I browsed the menu and seeing that the first meal was breakfast and I had just eaten, figured I would give this dining on demand thing a real try. There were 2 main meal services in the menu, Breakfast & Lunch. There was also the “Indulgence” menu (aka snacks). I figured I would try and reset my body towards North American time.

I set up my plan for the flight. A 14 hour flight and touching down in Houston at 4pm, but leaving around 9am. Rather than eat as the menu suggested which for some reason had a breakfast up first, I decided to work for a bit putting me around lunch time in Doha but a midnight snack time in Houston. This could work. So 2-3 hours solid work, break for “lunch” and eat off the indulgence menu. After “lunch” and a movie I could, continue working or keep relaxing till about Greenland/Iceland which should be about half way through the flight and then have breakfast. Considering I usually ate pretty light anyway I was sure there would be some muesli and fruit leftover. Then after some more work/movies I would be able to finish off with Lunch with everyone else as we approached Houston, fully back into sync on US time.

So out came the laptop, a drink in hand and I settled down to working for a while. Unfortunately the power plug was out in my row, so it meant I had only about 3 hours of work or so till my battery would be critical anyway, so that gave me a deadline for lunch time. Good way to manage it I guess. The minute I returned from the bathroom though, I had noticed that all of the shades had been drawn and most people were about to go to sleep. This didn’t seem at all smart to me but hey, what do I know. So while others slept, I worked.

The flight was pretty good. I worked, I ate, I watched a heap of movies, I ate some breakfast, I watched more movies. I worked a bit, I had some lunch. Add in a quick chat with the crew while taking some photos over Greenland, enjoying some relaxing time browsing the duty free catalogue but not able to get the cool aviator cufflinks I wanted (if anyone at Qatar Airways reads this, I wouldn’t mind a set of those cufflinks in your duty free mag *hint hint*).

The food was just great and I especially enjoyed the Soups. I actually had 2 different soups on this flight. During my “dinner” I had the cauliflower soup and then during my “lunch” I had the Pea & Mint soup. Both were fantastic. I also noticed that for some reason I always chose the vegetarian options. Both on the way over and the way back, the vegetarian meals just sounded so good and it really was. This one was a Flaky Vegetable Roll with Pineapple Korma & Tossed Okra Potato served with a Cashew Chili Rice. It was one of the Master Chef meals I tried (the Mint & Pea Soup was another) and this one was by the Vineet Bhatia who is a Michelin Star Chef from Mumbai but based in London (confused yet?). Unlike other airlines that just have one big name chef to design their menus, Qatar has 4 of them so that means you have a high likelihood of having at least one item across the course of your flight.

As we tracked south over the USA making landfall around Wisconsin we flew over Chicago, followed the Mississippi towards Texas and crossed into Texas close to Texarkana (which I have visited before). I didn’t want this flight to end as it was just so good and the crew was awesome. The purser came back to check on me and I had to admit they had been so nice to me. At one point during the flight there was me, the purser and 2 other cabin crew trying to recharge my laptop and it just wouldn’t work, so they took it forward to the cockpit to recharge. Amazingly generous of them! The purser asked how the flight compared to my flight over.

I had to sit back and think for a few seconds. Was it all true about the cabin pressure and the humidity etc? I thought back to how I felt on the flight towards Doha and I had felt pretty damn good on the way over. Whereas at that point, I did feel extremely run down, like someone had smacked me over the head a few dozen times. Pretty similar to how I have felt on every other long haul flight I had taken between Australia and the USA (only slightly better cause I wasn’t in economy). I guess it was true all the hype. Made for good data for an article I was due to write.

Pretty soon we were on descent into Houston. I was looking forward to getting onto the ground and experiencing a new airport but I had a few priorities though. Get through immigration as easy as possible (always a hassle usually) and then get a shower. I had checked before and there was showers in the C Terminal United Club (which I would have access to thanks to an international ticket and an onwards business class ticket, o and also my *A Gold status.

We touched down right opposite the D terminal (where international arrivals come in) and sitting there was a lovely BA 777-300ER (I hadn’t seen one yet and they don’t have many in their fleet) and a Lufthansa A380 (plus the usual United you would expect at one of their hubs). As we pulled in my name was announced to present myself in the jet way. Umm ok something is up. What I didn’t expect was an escort by Qatar Airways staff through the terminal. What an awesome way to end what had been a phenomenal trip. Walked all the way through security, immigration (which was a breeze mind you thanks to the escort) back through customs and then through security again. Seriously I was so not wanting to get on this next flight as it being United, the service would no way in hell compare to what I had just experienced. Hell I think Qantas First in April is going to be a tough call against this.

Since I was no back in the USA, through security and escorted all the way to the check in desk at the nearest gate, I bid goodbye to my escort from Qatar who I had been chatting with for the last 45 minutes to an hour it took to go through the formalities (would have been quicker by one of my bags came late off the belt and with that, a zip was broken so I had to make a baggage report) and had been good chatting with him. I was in the United Club in the E terminal the same terminal I would be departing out of. But I really just wanted to get my boarding pass for my next flight, then go and find a shower in whatever club I needed to go to. Turns out the E Club had showers. WINNER! I could sit down and relax and not move for several hours.

I grabbed a shower in the dodgy looking shower rooms, went back outside to change the leftover Rials back into USD (which gave me a whole 16 in cash… woooo) and then sat my butt down in the United Club and relaxed. Coffee in hand, some chocolate coated raisins (cause I am a sucker for those things I swear) and my laptop to catch up on life. I whiled away a few hours in the one spot.

About 10 minutes prior to boarding I packed up all my stuff and decided to wander on over to the gate which was about a 5 minute walk through the E terminal, past the hordes of people heading home from football games or starting their thanksgiving travel really early.

Boarding was a scrum, the gate lice were going crazy, their seemed to be half a plane load of people pre boarding or in the case of “Military in Uniform” it’s pretty much whoever wants to get on the plane first. I had to join the ranks of the gate lice to even attempt to get on and get my stuff in the overhead bin which would be required considering I was in row 1 and couldn’t have my bags anywhere but in the overhead.

I was by now totally a wreck. Ready to pass out, just wanting to be left alone. No channel 9 on this flight as it was an ExCon bird but that meant free DirectTv. So I found an interesting channel to distract me, put my headphones on, grabbed my book (first time on this trip I had actually read it funnily enough) and started to chill out.

We took off and it was slightly bumpy on the way out over Dallas. Drinks were served and sadly no standard Hot nuts on this flight (not sure why) all we got were a packet of lame pretzel sticks. What did I care though, I was just happy for anything. The service was fine up front, friendly and all but I did have to repeat “Diet Coke” so loud that I was shocked the whole plane didn’t hear me, cause apparently my accent is so bad no one can understand those two words :/

Dinner (well a snack according to United) was a fairly nice Antipasto platter with a fruit salad side dish and a brownie. What I could have really gone for was something really sugary to keep me going but that was failing fast and the coffee just did not help. I was drifting in and out of my thoughts for most of the flight and since it was pitch black out for just about all of the flight, I didn’t really take any photos.

From Qatar Trip

We came into descent in solid cloud which meant it was a bit bumpy, punched out of the clouds over Bellevue and then did a loop out over Lake Washington coming in for a 16 approach. The 16 approaches are good if you’re on the Starboard (right) side of the aircraft as you get a good view of downtown. Sadly all I saw was pitch black lake. Boooooooring. O did I mention that it was raining and less than 10C when we touched down. Welcome home!

We touched down and taxied quickly to the N Gates. The crew seemed to be in a rush to get off the plane and either get to the crew hotel and get some sleep or just get the hell out of dodge. I didn’t blame them cause I wanted the same but it was midnight, I had to be up for work in 5 hours and I was a good 45 minutes away from home (by the time I get my bag, get to the truck and drive home). I was looking forward to getting home though to get some real sleep.

My bag came out with the priority baggage (awesome work United) but my Aegean Airlines Bag Tag was gone, broken clean off. Aegean will only ever issue one bag for the entirety of your time with them. My one and only tag was gone forever. That was just a good way for United to make me feel after the crappyness I was at by this stage. Couldn’t do much about it really, so I called the parking garage to come pick me up.

From Qatar Trip

5 minutes later I was in my truck, heading for home after the staff at the garage put my bags in it for me, along with some water and 30 minutes after that I was pulling up at home into my driveway and within 1 hour and 15 minutes of touching down in Seattle. I was at home, asleep in my bed. Ending a truly awesome flight.
