Every year the RNA, or the “Ekka” as just about every brisbane resident knows it (its our annual show for all you non queensland people), has a photography competition to go with their other competitions to help support Queenslanders. Along with both painting and drawing, sculpture, even quilting, cookery and a lot more in between, photography sits in with all of these other categories and they have these big competitions.

Now you don’t win much money (about $100 for first prize) but what you do get is some nice feedback from professional judges about your work and the good bit, for $5 (members cost) you can put your artwork on show for thousands and thousands of people to see. Thats something i have wanted to do for ages, i have always put it off, always said “next year” or “my photos arent good enough.”

This year i finally pulled my finger out and did something about it. 3 photos were worked on tirelessly for hours and hours, and were fussed over, worried about and even deleted and started again. I finally took those 3 photos to the printer, then the framer to be mounted. The 3 photos are now all handed in, submitted to the RNA for this years competition. Closer to the RNA i will suggest everyone goes to the Ekka and check them out. I will show small previews here so you know what to look for. But I will keep everyone posted as to how it goes.

Judging is 12Jul but i dont think i find out till at least August how it all goes.

Cross your fingers 😀

So during the trip to the USA I took around 2500 photos. I don’t think I have ever taken that many in such a short duration before. I don’t think I will ever do it again! It has been a nightmare working on all of the photos. I have finally finished touching up, resizing, watermarking, scanning, sorting, captioing and uploading all of the photos.

More photos have gone on the net since the last update including a folder dedicated to just the shots taken of the Aircraft in the USA. I had a good time spotting in the USA. Would of loved to of had the time to do some serious spotting but didn’t. Closest I got to it was at JFK while waiting for my flight I had a beautiful shot of the runway from the Terminal 7 food court, that was until a British Airways 747-400 blocked my view when it pulled into the gate (bastards). Also some shots from the Helicopters that I went on along with the Heliport at Manhattan.

Of the photos that I have uploaded is my first ever Panorama shot. This was taken at our final stop in the Grand Canyon on our way out of the Canyon to Monument Valley. The photo turned out pretty good considering. Not 100% happy with it but it is not to bad!

Back at work now, trying my hardest to get my head back into the groove and it is slowly happening. I think once I have to start looking for somewhere to live, the world is gonna come crashing down fast! One departure at work this week I was a little saddened to find out about. Katherine Laing, a beautiful girl, who turns out to be a bit of a spotter as well has left. She was a very kind and lovely person and I would of loved to get to know her better as we only really started talking after the conference like 2 weeks before I left for the USA. It sucks! Life moves forward though.

Anyway below is the link to the new folder for the Aircraft shots along with another link to the USA shots. Also I have updated the Photo page with information on my new camera since I broke my A10 while I was on holidays.

Spotter Photos USA
USA 2007

What an afternoon. How else could you spend a lazy sunday afternoon than rushing through Brisbane city following a group of Zombies trying to get photos. What the hell am I talking about I can hear you thinking. Well today was the Annual Brisbane Zombie walk (no this is not an April fools joke). There was quite a lot of people congregated at the Roma St Parklands Ampitheatre, patiently getting themselves ready, covered in fake blood, ready and waiting for a trumpet call. When the trumpet call came so did a giant groan from all those around. It was a sight to behold. Several hundred zombies massing to the stage ready to be lead off to their end destination.

Once the zombies were assembled it was as though it was also time for the photographers to assemble. It was a sight to see. Several hundred zombies and a lot of cameras. There was only one TV station there (Channel 10) but there was a few cops to help along the walk. I was really their to support my friend Blair and Ben (also known as scythe and Franger respectively). Myself along with Nat, Andie and Jono followed this line of zombies all the way to the end and it was just a site to behold. At one stage the line of zombies stretched along Edward st from the Corner of Elizabeth St all the way up to the Corner of Adelaide St. Thats two city blocks. All the way plenty of moans and groans and wierd looks from onlookers.

After the walk was over a group of us went to go for a drink. Sadly the bouncers at the Victory were absolute dicks. They wouldn’t let my friends in because they didn’t fit the dress standards (they had closed in shoes, long pants). All because of a little fake blood. So we went to the Exchange and had a drink their instead (which is funny because the Victory usually lets everyone in and i mean everyone).

In the end almost 500 photos later and a lot of walking done I am stuffed. I feel like a good sleep but Band of Brothers is on tonight so much watch.

In other news went out to dinner last night with Ross, Suzanne, Brendan and Amanda (an old friend from tafe) and it was good to get out and socialize and not be a shut in for a night even though being a shut in is what I should be doing at the moment. Going to probably book my flights to Sydney tommorrow so that should be fine. Hopefully I can pull it off to get the Tuesday off work (day before Anzac Day) so that I can fly down to Sydney on QF176 which is an International Flight. Would mean that I can do some spotting in Sydney in the morning and see how things go, but it will depend. If it turns out I’m scheduled to have that weekend off i might just keep it. I dunno yet. We shall see.

2007 Zombie Walk

Lots of stuff to update this time.  My dearest friend Morgan has returned to the country making me a very happy chappy.  It is great to have her back not only because its good to have her close by but i missed having a decent conversation with her.  Now that she is only an hour away in Sydney it is so much easier than on the other side of the planet.

Other friend related news is Michelle F from my fantastic Contiki crew is heading downunder for New Years in Sydney.  Hopefully she can make it up to Brisbane for a day or more and we can catch up.  It would be awesome to see her again.  Speaking of Contiki I have booked my next one… well Two.  On the 30th of August 2007 I will be flying to the good old US of A.

I will be heading over to Auckland first on my trip to LA.  I will be flying with Air New Zealand and United Airlines.  While in the USA i will be doing two Contiki tours.  First will be the Grand Southern departing LA on the 1st of September.  Along the way I will visit Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Dallas, New Orleans, Orlando, Washington DC and then finally arriving into New York on the 24th of September.  On the 25th of September i start my Big Apple Explorer tour and that will take me till the 28th of September before i start my long journey home from New York’s JFK Airport.  I am hoping to get a chance to do some spotting while I’m away.  Hopefully at either JFK or LAX.

On the topic of spotting went out today to the airport and got some spotting done.  It had been a while since I had been out so needed to get out.  Wasn’t that great for shots.  About the only good thing about the day was getting a shot of the HeavyLift Belfast.  I have been chasing that beast for so long and finally got a shot.  Gave my new Tripod a work out on Saturday night by taking it up to Mt Cootha.  Been testing out shooting in RAW format and the conversion process but we will see how things go.  I want to end up entering a photo of mine into the Ekka next year but who knows if that is going to happen.

Its late im outta here.

Well its about time i got these photos from the contiki trip online. Its only taken about a week. I’ve been so busy getting back into the groove at work that I havent had time. I have had to go to 2 different work functions this week with like 2 days notice :/

It was great to go back through all the photos and have memories come back. I would like to thank Elm who has sent me all of the Bling Party photos that you will see. Without them I would have no proof of my stupidity on this trip. To everyone from the trip looking at these let me know and I can burn an email for you with all of the photos I have on them.

It has been such a fantastic trip and I loved every minute of it. I’m already planning my next trip away, probably to the states to see a few people and then to Canada to visit a few more.

Anyway its my day off and I have heaps to do.. gotta go!
