It took mere steps from the gate to make it airside and the next thing you know, I am standing in the main terminal corridor steps from the cold outside, so I found somewhere to drop the jacket and get myself sorted. Back and fully stacked up in my gear, I ventured outside into the cold to try and find the rental car shuttle. Sadly there wasn’t much in the way for signage for rental cars, just hotels and parking but I eventually found it and huddled in the cold waiting for the shuttle. When it did arrive, the driver decided to wait almost 15 minutes for what felt like every single person in the terminal. Even though he could of been around twice in that time he kept the doors open… to the 14F temperatures outside…. bastard.

I eventually got to the rental car area and now was the tough time deciding what was on the lot. With the temperature and the threat of snow I figured an SUV or AWD of some kind. Sadly… none on the lot that I could see. There was a Dodge Journey and I wasn’t sure if it was a 4WD or not, and no staff around to check, so I grabbed the next best thing. Chrysler 300C at least I knew it would be stacked full of goodies (and it was). No heated steering wheel though. By the time I rolled out of the lot I was in my leather seat getting comfy, then it dawned on me… leather seats, frigid temperatures… DOH! But thankfully there was heated seats… o yes!

I took the car and headed downtown to the National Airline History Museum for a bit of a private explore with a friend and when that was over and we were being kicked out thanks to a private function we headed off to find some BBQ where the wait wasn’t around. In the end we got to Winslows BBQ down by the Rivermarket area and it was good. Kansas City BBQ is all about the sauce and this place is known for it’s spicy sauce. Habanero spicy. Called “Fire Pork” the sandwich was damn tasty, being pulled pork mixed with the Habanero sauce and served on some lovely Jalapeno bread (didn’t even know that existed). Pair that with some deep fried pickles, a serving of beans and coleslaw and I was a happy man. Plenty of Avgeek chatting over dinner and time to excuse myself and head over the border into Kansas to my hotel.

My hotel for the night was the Crowne Plaza Kansas City – Overland Park and it wasn’t all that bad. It was definitely a conference hotel as when I got there, the places was going nuts thanks to a medical conference. The music was pumping out the back in the conference rooms and thankfully I couldn’t hear a thing from my room. Settled in for a nights rest as it was going to be a cold morning.

Sunday 8th December 2013

The outlook outside this morning was not conducive to running (ok so I figured that before I flew over) so that meant a gym workout and a quick walk through the hotel as well. The hotel wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t perfect. The room was ok but the sad thing was that they had so many faults and did not even care about it at all when I checked out. But for free, I can’t complain at all. It is close to a number of restaurants and shops, but the nearest starbucks was a good mile away in a straight line, or a 10 minute line in a convoluted fashion. But I did it anyway as I was trying to work up some stars to make gold. Funny things you will do for loyalty of any kind. After grabbing a coffee from starbucks and driving very very slowly, I headed onto the Interstate towards town and a recommendation for breakfast.

The snow made for an interesting drive and looking around where the restaurant was made it feel surreal. Definitely wasn’t like this when it snowed in Seattle. I wasn’t going to complain it was pretty cool. I had breakfast at “You Say Tomato” which was definitely a hipster hangout and it was a place I probably would like more but it wasn’t all that great. The coffee wasn’t bad, the Caramel pecan cinnamon roll was epicly good (would of been more awesome with frosting) but the oatmeal was disappointing. Dry and horrible….. blergh. Expensive didn’t help things at all. Maltby Cafe it was not!

After breakfast I headed off to get a tour around Kansas City with some friends and got to see all the geeky things. Got to take several photos at at DC3 in the middle of the city (Above a coffee factory). Took a selfie at the state line and even managed to visit the most beautiful train station I have seen outside of New York (nothing beats Grand Central). I also got to see the old TWA headquarters and had numerous photos taken at the Moonliner, with me and the Moonliner and just more photos in general. It was getting cold out so time for some lunch. Wanting something general we went to “Grinders West” which was meant to be a Sandwich place, and we didn’t expect much at all. Little did we know we would happen across an awesome Avgeek place. They had old AA Economy seats at a couple of the booths, even with working seatbelts (didn’t recline though). The food wasn’t bad either 😉

After lunch it was time to make a few souvenir purchases and then start returning slowly towards the airport so that I could make it out safely, farewell Kansas City, you were awesome.

Saturday 7th April 2013

A leisurely morning almost compared to my usual trips as I could sleep in till a half normal time, work out, have breakfast and partially clean the house all with a couple of coffees under my belt and making my flight without a hassle. An extra coffee for the truck and I was headed out a little delayed waiting for something to upload to my tablet. I was travelling light this time with just my duffle and a backpack. No SLR, no laptop, just the tablet and my p&s.

I made it to the parking garage with good timing and by the time I hit the terminal since I already had my boarding pass I was looking good if the lines were not to bad, sadly… they were not good. I tried and old trick since the Alaska mobile boarding passes barely showed any information and used the United/Alaska premium security entry and funnily enough they let me through showing my Gold Card. O silly Seattle TSA, how Gullible you are.

Through security (eventually), grab a photo of one of the numerous Alaska special liveries at SeaTac that morning and onto the Train to the N Gates, popping out just about 10 minutes before boarding should commence. Being mindful that Alaska board almost an hour before departure for some unknown reason. Ran into someone I knew for a quick hello and chat, grabbing a printed boarding pass and then it was to Starbucks for more coffee and a water bottle fill and I was off to the gate, rocking up just as boarding started for general economy.

Alaska Airlines – AS762
Seattle Tacoma to Kansas City International (SEA-MCI)
1030-1542
Boeing 737-900 (N315AS)
Economy Class – Seat 24A

Boarding: 0950 (Gate N3)
Push Back: 1029
Take off Roll: 1040 (Runway 34R)
Top of Descent: 1513
Touch Down: 1540 (Runway 1L)
Shut Down: 1458 (Gate 59)

Boarding for my area was called and I was off to the back of the flight, all the way back. Being a 737-900 (my 3rd flight on the type) it is like boarding an A321… lots of way to go to the back (not as much though but you get the idea). The whole point of this trip was doing it on the cheap, I wasn’t checking bags or anything so I just sucked it up and went all the way to back like I was meant to. Luckily I was at the front of the line so I did manage to get some overhead bin space. With a full flight expected I stashed my gear and sat down as quickly as possible.

From Kansas City BBQ Run

All my gear stored appropriately and I was doing the usual pre flight stuff (photos, log book, general tweeting) and next thing I know the doors are shut, theres a middle seat next to me free and we are pushing back. SCORE! What was even better was the sun was out as we pushed back and although it was freakishly cold the light was awesome. So as we taxiied past a few specials and some heavies at the South Terminal, I saw the Spirit of Hawaii (which had been parked at the gate next to ours) sitting in the penalty box… o no! We took off ahead of them and pretty soon we were turning left towards the east and parts unknown.

It was wierd to be using my phone and tablet all the way over as it was my first flight with the new PED rules and I do like it! Managed to get through a good chunk of my book but sadly, no music for the first part of the flight. I hadn’t checked the batteries on my headphones so as soon as I turned them on, they went dead. Checked for spares…none… DOH! So no music till I could take out my earplugs.. dammit, ah well.

We cruised east and the crew started a very long service process, selling their entertainment systems, then food, then we can get a drink. But it was ok I had water and thought ahead to bring some lunch with me. Bagel, Turkey and some carrots. Boring, cheap ($3 total) and filling enough for a 3 hour flight. With a diet lemonade I was ok enough. Even managed a few rounds before they closed up service. What did I do on the flight? I read, used some free wifi thanks to Gogo and just bummed about.

We started descent somewhere outside of the airport, I had no idea where I was or what should or shouldn’t look familiar so just took it all in. As we approached Kansas City (Missouri side) you could see a sprinkling of snow around the airport, which did not bode well at all really. It was going to be cold, I had expected that but I didn’t want it to snow on me. We came back around after going the long way into the airport. As we touched down and cleared the runway it was a plethora of trijets on the freight ramp. A couple of 727s and an MD11F, add on a DC9 as well and it was awesome vintage time. Off in the distance was a couple of ex Qantas 767s awaiting destruction as well. It is always unique being in the midwest. The rest of the airport seemed deserted with just one or two aircraft in existence it seemed.

We pulled into the gates next to a Delta 757 and just like that my flight to Kansas City is over. By the time I Was able to extricate myself from the back of the plane, I was prepped to grab my jacket from my bag before I froze to death. That didn’t take all that long as once you leave the gates your about 4 steps from the landside of the terminal…Aircraft to Landside in less than 10 metres…. SCORE! Next thing I know its time to get my jacket out and get moving, since I had just officially stepped foot in a new state.

I had set myself a goal this year to be able to add at least one more state to my list of US States visited and unfortunately I had left it pretty late to get to that point. Without it I would go one short on some of my goals and that could not be so. But I didn’t want to spend all that much money really. It’s the end of the year, travel is expensive in the holiday season so it was time to use up some of those points that are just floating around.

I had enough points in my Alaska account for a round trip economy or enough in my american for a one way in first. So I figured round trip economy would be perfectly fine but if i took some out of each I could get away with a bit more choice. But where to? The two easiest places for me to get to were either Kansas City or Anchorage. Both would add points off my list, both had interests to keep me going for at least 24 hours if required. The issue was picking which one to visit. Yes Alaska at this time of year is freezing cold, but then where isn’t. But the time of year it would not be all that much light during the day, so that would be cool I guess. Getting some plane spotting in for a day and seeing Alaska would be nice. But then there is Kansas City where I can knock two states off for the price of one, as the Airport is technically in Kansas City Missouri a few miles from the Kansas City in Kansas… I like this idea. A friend out there tempted me further by offering to show me around and take me for some good BBQ as well. It wouldn’t be the first time I had flown across the country for BBQ, might as well do it again right?

Flights booked and thanks to using points and times etc it was going to be my most boring trip of the year almost with tickets on the Alaska direct flights in each direction, the price in cash outlay $5 total, points was down a good 25,000 all up with half from each of my Alaska & AA accounts. Not a big deal there. Next came picking a hotel, this was probably going to be the most expensive part of it. But the day after I booked the flights, IHG released their points break list where they offer accommodation for 5000 points, well under what they normally offer. Funnily enough a hotel in Kansas City Kansas was on the list. I snatched it up instantly. Hell I could now justify both states as I was flying into one and staying in the other. It may of been a little bit out of the main downtown core but who cares. Total cost to me $0 cash, 5000 points.

So car hire was booked on the usual last minute specials that National offers and I was looking at a damn cheap trip, what with a cost of less than $45 in cash outlay on the three essentials I was look pretty good, it was just time to wait for the day to arrive.

I do believe temperatures below 32F make this the coldest I have ever dealt with, the final few days of last week proved that last winter was nothing and that I am in for a rude surprise.

Even with stupidly cold weather the weekend was good. Why? I escaped into the sky. I was back in the air for probably my last time for the year, time to get those laat few miles towards the end of year run. I managed to add some new experiences to the list.

A new airport is always good and I added Kansas City International to it, add on the fact i crossed two more States offy list in the one trip and I think that is good just for that! But I also experienced snow for the third time, real falling snow. I didn’t go out running in it this time (learnt that lesson) but I did get out and drive in it (not that I had much choice).

I wil have a full rundown and trip report from the weekend on this blog, plus the $100 challenge piece on AirlineReporter.com but it was a successful weekend. What started off as an excuse to get some more bbq turned into a pretty fun weekend. Who knows maybe an annual BBQ run should happen?

You get the picture right? Cause it has been 4 years since that journey began. It has not been easy, things never will, I am a much different person now to what I was then. There are still parts of me that I am not happy about, that I don’t think I ever will be happy with, but each and every day I work towards this new life.

A lot has changed in the last few years and although I still struggle each and every day with my weight, I am happy with the way I am now. My habits have changed a lot and I am thankful that every day I spend on this earth, alive, healthy and well is a good day! Can’t complain about that.

There are times that I don’t want to get up and go for a run, there are times when I don’t want to do anything, but then I remember that I still enjoy those things, I get up and do it anyway! How much has that changed since 4 years ago when I couldn’t even run at all. I wouldn’t run…

Looking forward in life right now, I am happy that I have a future that I see as positive, that I see will be worthwhile. What does my future hold? who knows! but either way I am going to be healthy and alive… and a lot lighter than I was 4 years ago!

Happy Thanksgiving to all. Today is the day over here in the USA that we should be thankful. I am definately thankful for many things, some things that I don’t even realise at times. I have to say that most of all, I am thankful for my friends and family, both here and abroad. I have many friends around the world, spread out across all different continents and all different countries and even though we struggle to get to speak to each other thanks to time zones, I love and care about each and every one of them.

I miss my family back home in Australia and although I don’t get to spend this holiday season with them (this will be the second time away from them at christmas) they know that I love them and care about them, that they mean so much to me, and I know that even though they are on the otherside of the world, they still care (dad shows that by the random emails I get from him, or the fact he just shipped half a cake around the world).

But I am also thankful to my friends over here in the USA. The ones who are closest to me in location, though sometimes I don’t think I show enough appreciation to them. I feel like a workaholic most days and sometimes I just don’t have the energy or time to see them. I want them to know that I am thankful to have you as friends, that you do mean a lot to me and that without you, my life here in the USA would be super boring.

So with that little bit of holiday thanks, I allow you all to return to your regular routine today of Turkey, Pie & Football… and imagine this in my best ever american accent “Happy Thanksgiving Ya’ll”

A very scary thing happened this morning at Bootcamp that kind of gave me a wake up call. I have been working so hard to lose all the weight lately that I think I may have taken things a little to far to fast. I am down a good 15-16lb since I started less than 3 weeks ago. that is a HUGE amount to lose but in that time frame, it is way to much way to fast. I have been pushing it way to hard lately and this morning things caught up with me a little.

It has been cold the last few days, mid to high 20s (Fahrenheit for my aussie friends, think Negatives for Celsius) and that is not a good thing for this Aussie boy used to the warmth of Queensland. My hands feel it the most and even on Thursday after being trapped at the bus stop for almost an hour with my hands in gloves, I couldn’t feel them in the 28F temps. This morning it was around 26-30 and during bootcamp I wear wearing my running gloves (older pair) and usually for a 30 minute run my hands get cold but it is not to bad. I think a combination of the pain in my hands after 45 minutes, very little food or water lately and my body took it all as to much. First I started to struggle lifting a 3 pound weight. Yeah that is like less than a bag of sugar. I kind of knew then something wasn’t right. My hearing started going funny and I started getting dizzy. I immediately stopped and tried to stand still, before I knew it I had managed to safely sit on the ground and grabbed the water from my bag. Thankfully I could feel the bottle enough to get the lid off so I could drink but otherwise it would of been bad.

My trainer (Cassie) came over to check on me and told me to get my stuff and get in the truck straight away to warm up. Though I probably would of tried to push through it all and finish the session off (so close to finishing) I did what I was told. I got in the truck and cranked the heater right up. My body was obviously struggling big time to recover but I started warming up enough to at least start driving home. This wasn’t the smartest thing to do either because about 2 minutes later my hands started to go through absolute agony. I was in excrutiating pain as my hands warmed up and I have never felt that bad before. By the time I got myself home, I just left most of my gear in the truck, grabbed my keys and my phone and my wallet and ran upstairs. Heater on the in the apartment (which is rare for me) and jumped straight into a hot shower (not before hitting the coffee machine to get that going as well, something warm for my hands I guess). Within 15 minutes I was doing better and within an hour after having some breakfast and some coffee and plenty of water (about a litre) I was back to normal.

What am I going to take away from all of this. Obviously the fact that I pushed to hard and to fast. I need to take my time, so to hell with the weight loss this weekend, going to take it easy, and get back into it Monday but not has hard. I will probably still go for a run tomorrow, but at least I will make sure I rug up first. Part of me wants to keep pushing it, but that is a very very very dumb idea. I need to get this loss done gradually and if it takes a big longer, it takes a bit longer. I would rather not have another experience like this. With the temperatures as well lately, it kind of leads into the fact that this is going to be a damn cold winter and I a feel I am going to be in for a rude shock. Time to perhaps get a damn warm jacket?

It has been quite a while since I had a good rant on the blog, so for those who don’t like rants, move on please, see you in a few days time. For now though it is time to rant away!

I recently saw this article on USA Today come through my twitter feed. it pretty much mentions that Expedia staff in the USA don’t take all their Vacation time. I mean seriously.. what the fuck. American’s barely get any leave over here as it is and they apparently don’t take it all.

I do know what it is like to feel like I am attached to the office at times, I seem to work almost 7 days a week at times with just about every day working through my work emails from home. I am usually working on my emails before I head to the office in the morning and sometimes late at night from home. The old saying “Work to live” over here is a little bit confused cause you definitely seem to “Live to Work”. I don’t quite get why americans only get 2 weeks leave (roughly 10 days) and there are barely any public holidays during the year that are 100% guaranteed (only about 5 or 6 really). It’s a tough sell compared to Australia where you get 20 Days leave and a boat load of public holidays (though most of them I worked anyway).

I don’t see how you couldn’t take all of your leave though, either your saving them up (which is hard enough to do as well as they just don’t accrue that fast at all) or you are WAY to involved in your work. A little to much working not enough spendy spendy? Although I would love to see Americans get more leave for several reasons (not just so I got more myself) but to be honest it would make my work life easier as well, purely cause struggling to fit a 2 week vacation to Australia and visit every city known to man is a bit of a challenge, more time would make it a lot easier.

But sadly I can’t really complain all that much, life over here is pretty good and I have it fairly good here compared to back home, but yet there are things I wish I could get more of (leave obviously, money as always) but yet, those are the sacrifices that I made when I came over…

/end rant
